Default Why you never shoot a brand new gun at a match

Because, it may, or may not run well.... In this case, it doesn't run well.

My point here is for new shooters. Don't assume your brand new wazoo blinged out blaster with all the trick mods is going to run. The first rule is only change one thing at a time....

And you can make Glocks quit also with incorrect modifications, it just takes alot more work than a 1911.

Been there, done that (usually when I get a new part delivered on the day before a match). It sucks. Now I always bring a backup gun.

Same here. The only weird part is that ever since I started bringing backup guns, my primaries stopped breaking parts and haven't failed since.

looks like a new .45 from a major customizer/manufacturer. i could be mistaken, but it just seems like he has to hit the slide to go into battery indicating that it is still tight and in its mating of slide to frame phase...

brand new 38 Super, hand loaded, did not drop each round into the chamber. So a combination of newness and ammo.

Don't assume or bet your life a "blinged out blaster" is EVER going to run. Shoot real combat guns... Not game pieces.

I seen SIGs, wihout modifications, quit over the years also. In this case it was a brand new Colt 38Super, not modified, but obviously had issues. My point is never assume anything is going to run, in competition, or otherwise. Personally I put over 1,000 caps thru a carry gun before listing it on my permit. The only exception to that is any OEM Glock, or Jframe, where 50-100 caps is enough.

Last comp I did with my stock Sig 1911, it ran flawless with crapy ammo. I was suprised because I only had put 200 rounds through it at that time. The guy shooting a open class Block was having FTF/FTE constantly.

Is there any need for anything besides an OEM Glock or a J frame?

OEM GLOCK will fail with bad ammo which is a lot of what I see in that vid, but yah been there done that never again great teaching point though I wish I would have read about it instead of learning the "hard way".

Bad ammo is not a gun problem, it's an ammo problem. thats why you chamber check the rounds first.

1911 and Jframe until from 1968 to 1992, OEM Glock and Jframe from 1992 to 2012, but now I added Kahr CW9.

You know, running a Glock is not a bad idea.

One thing that shooting matches taught me .. reliability is King.

I have a tricked out SP-01 and it is dead to nuts accurate, but it gives me headaches. It's tricked out so that I can get light primer strikes. The aftermarket grips sometimes STICK the magazine and in terms of "manual of arms" it requires manual decocking ... which earned me a DQ when I ND'ed while manually decocking it and not focussing on the job.

Then during one match where we were allowed to start (not USPSA or IPSC) with the gun cocked into SA, I got some weird jams, which I figured out, on the way home, was that I was accidentally bumping the safety on.

So, being a newbie, I decided to leave the tricked out gun at home, and bought a Glock 17. Now I sort of "trust" the gun more and that makes me feel more confident about running it at a match. I still suck at seating the magazine all the way (last match, I'd pull the trigger ... hear nothing, then rack the slide and as I did that, the mag just fell to the ground ... happened 3 times!! But it was me not pushing the mag up all the way).

But, when I was bumping up the safety on the CZ, I had the same feeling the guy in the video must have been feeling ... "WTF? What's going on?!" then the sinking feeling of "Well, crap...time is just slipping away" then ... "Ah whatever, I'll just walk the rest of the way, it's pointless now".

So ... yeah, there is something to say for an internally stock Glock with Glock magazines! Especially for us newbies. (I'm not saying the guy in the video is a newbie, just that I am).
