Arrow PRC II, Days 1 & 2 AAR

This past weekend we had days one and two of PRC II. The first day was held on BLM land near Tehachapi and the second day was held at A Place to Shoot in Saugus.

The goal of day one was for everyone involved to get “hard dope” for the rifles out to at least 600 yards. “Hard dope” is the actual corrections necessary for ones rifle for the various yards as opposed to that obtained through ballistics programs, which can and often do, vary in their accuracy. The reasons behind this were so that the students could get actual hands on dope for their rifles out to the 600 yard mark which is often very hard to do in So Cal and to use in later portions of the class when a mid range zero is dialed in and then targets are engaged at distances of 100 - 800 yards using hold under / over.

During this first day, after additional surveying of the area for target locations, the student started by obtaining a solid 100 yard zero using 1” dots. From there the target stand was moved to 200 yards where the students again obtained their zeros. During the phase it became obvious that we were not going to be able to spot the hits on paper any farther out due mainly to mirage and the light conditions so the decision was made to have steel targets for the remaining of the exercise that were size appropriate for the range. By the end of the first day, all students were able to record dope for 100, 200, 300, 400 and 660 yards (there was no good location for a 500-yard target from our firing position).

The second day of the class was spent for the most part with position shooting with a sling wherein the proper sling usage for the four basic positions was demonstrated then practiced by the students first in dry firing then live fire. The class started with the prone position, progressed into kneeling, sitting and ending with standing. The students started with 3” targets in prone, but were soon shooting groups of around 1.0 to 1.5”. In sitting and kneeling 5.5” Shoot n Sees were used which the students had no trouble hitting to the point I contemplated changing over to 3” dots to challenge their new found skills. In standing we switched to 8” targets. The class ended with demonstrations and practice of improvised positions such as “buddy shooting” and side prone.

The third class will be sometime in either February or March on a date yet to be determined. In this class, the students will be faced with numerous challenges where the skill previously learned will be brought to bear along with some additional skills, which will be acquired during the day.

Why not sell #2 and just keep #1? What crazy plans you got for #2?

my inventory will consist of 2 700 sa, 2 mike rock barrels in .308, 1 hs stock, 1 badger base, 1 warner base, and 1 timney trigger. this what i have extra. i'm thinking of using 1 700 sa, and throw one of the barrels on it with a cloned thruster brake, timney trigger, and base with my mark 4 scope. i'll put this in my safe as my back up. i'll still have enough parts for 1 full build which i'll reallly have no use for. it'll be a 700 sa trued, bolt trued, holland recoil lug pinned and trued, rock barrel m24 1:11 twist .308 match chamber with counterbore, custom brake, 20 moa base, new hs stock, custom tactical bolt mod, and timney trigger. all parts will be brand new except for the action and bolt being remachined and refinished in duracoat. thinking of selling this for $1,700. do you think someone would buy it with a all day, hot barrel 1/2moa garanty? if not, i'll have three rifles in .308

the rock was about 935yards actually. the 835yard was the 1/2 moa steel target. it's harder to shoot the steel than the rock. the 935yard rock is about 2-2 1/2 moa.

Which rock?
What steel target at 835?
I lased the rock Bruno and I were tapping several times at 835.
We both milled it to be 1.0mil wide/tall and laser confirms 835 so it should be about 30" wide.

This rock looked like it was a fist reaching out of the hillside at an angle, not like some simple round rock just sitting there.

You guys were pounding a 4.5" plate at 835yards? That's impressive.

20" Rock at 935yards is also as impressive in field conditions.

308s?

One 8mm mag but the rest 308's. Its always field conditions for us...we don't have manicured greens to shoot from!

They are fibbing about the 4.5" plate at 835.
I was there until the last shots were fired and never saw it.

re: 4 inch plate, no fibbing here.

i'll show you next time. it's next to a bush. very small steel target, 1/2 moa size. it's about 4 inches wide. you gotta be dead on with your wind, or you'll miss. in the morning, it took my fifth shot to hit it. then in the late afternoon, i went 50%, 2 out of 4. i woudn't call it pounding, but i hit it pretty dam well. in 5-10mph conditions it's not bad.

Haha. It's there. I should know.. I helped pound the stake into the ground. It was put up there a week before the class and would be hard to see unless you either put it there or looked for the dirt/ bullet splashing during the action.

We shot at it before the class as we waited for people to arrive. Then by the end of the class when we had time to pick random targets, I think we were trying to stay warm.. heck.. I packed up and sat in the heated car

The target isn't there anymore. When we went up to get the targets, Joe grabbed it to put it a little closer and in an area where misses would be readily visible.

Randall-you should have seen it...especially with that IOR! It was painted yellow and red and was right along the road up there. It was a healthy shot.

I did not know to look for it.
Bruno and I were looking for long shots at the end with good clearings in case we needed to spot misses.
Maybe it was not visible from my blanket with the big bush right in front of us at 5 yards.

That may be the case. Next time we all get together out there we'll have more steel. We can set it up where its visible from any spot on the line.
