Default CZ 557 VS. Howa 1500/Weatherby Vangauard 2 **** UPDATE ****

So I have narrowed my 30-06 search down to one of these.

I haven't held the CZ557 , but heard good things about it. Anyone have one of these and can give feedback?

And the Howa or Weatherby are almost the same gun... But I can fine the Howa Houge Game King Package for about $500 new. ( Houge stock, Nikko Stirling scope )
Feedback?

((Please don't tell me I should buy a 700 or an American, neither are what I want.))
************************************************** **********
After all the great feedback I recieved here, I stumbled upon a GREAT opportunity to buy a Weatheryby Vanguard 30-06. It is a Series 1 - but truthfully as my first bolt gun, I am more than happy with the choice. On top of being a great deal... resale, aftermarket part availability, and most importantly... the abundance of information available makes this a great choice for me! Thanks again to all for the feedback!

Not fondled the 557.... but CZ's are nice. Great triggers.

As to the others, you mentioned one comes with a nikko sterling scope... Give that scope to someone you hate... Sit back and laugh at their frustration... Those things are garbage- It *might be* good enough for an airsoft...

I concur. I bought a Howa last year; great rifle for the money but that scope is garbage. Either way you go, save some money to put towards some nice glass. One thing I have to mention is the Hogue stock on the Howa is kind of flimsy towards the nose. If you put a bipod on it and load it up, you'll notice a bit of flex.

I've handled the CZ before but haven't shot it. Like the previous comment, their triggers are nice and the Mauser action is slick.

The Nikko sterling scope is junk but it will work better then irons The Howa is a great rifle.
Weatherby differs in that it has a nice bolt shroud the Howa has none Weatherby is chambered in Weatherby cartridges Howa is not. Weatherby is guaranteed to shoot SUB MOA, Howa is not. CZ makes nice stuff all the way around but IMO the stocks are a bit bulky. Oh before all of the after market parts guys chime in, some rifles can do without.

I have the Howa 1500 Gameking pkg in 308. About 2 years old. The scope works, but it is a cheapo. Good enough to begin with if you have just $500. I like that the rifle is a bit heavier, that helps with recoil. The rifle seems REALLY accurate.

I have a Vanguard. I like it. It is in 257Weatherby but the 30-06 is nice and I have shot one. I like the MOA warr on it and it does work. I believe they are $449 now.
I would buy the Vanguard and put a quality(Leupold 3X9X40) scope on it. If you are trying to go cheaper the American made Redfield would be my choice. Also Leupold made.
The scope on the Howa is not worth $12 and the Weatherby is much the same rifle but with a better accuracy warr.
When I had my 7mag rebarreled to 264Win mag I planned to get another 7mmRem mag and it would have been a Vanguard. I decided not to buy because with the 264mag while having a 300mag and 338mag I really did not need the 7mag. I would rather use the money to hunt with.

CZ550 is just a nicely made mauser 98.

Get the Howa.
Howa is a nicer gun.

I have both the CZ 452 and CZ 527 American rifles. They are nicely made and shoot very well. I like them and I'd buy another.
I think the Howa is a good rifle but it has no real resale value. You'll notice that those things languish forever in the marketplace even when priced very fairly.

is the 557 still in production - I do not see it listed on their website - I see the 550 though.

the 550 looks nice, not chambered in 30-06 though, if the quality is anything like the 452 I have, it is very nice.

I have never really been impressed with the Howa rifles, though I have heard good things about them. That said I have never shot one either.

I know that you have "narrowed it down to 2" and that you don't want to hear me say to buy a 700 or an American instead... you are in luck because I wont; I might hint at a model 70 or a Weatherby though

*edit - the CZ is available in 30-06 but only with the Mannlicher stock

You ain't kidding. I just pulled my ad. Someone was willing to pay 450 with a hundred rounds of ammo and a bipod. I just couldn't do it. I'm fixing it up instead. If I was to do it again, I'd have got the one that comes with the wood stock that they've only offered recently. That's a fine rifle.

Howa is entry level and is decent but you will always be left "wanting". Get something that will satisfy you and make you not think of another.

Winchester bolt guns have that feel, CZ definitely, Browning, Sako, etc.

Great feedback! Thanks all ....

I think, I know, I have pushed the HOWA aside for a Weatherby Vanguard S2 in 30-06. (Maybe a Series 1 if the price is right!) But I just cant turn away from the CZ 557 Sporter or a used 550!!

My first choice was the Weatherby. I "settled" and "justified it" cause Howa makes the Vanguard. I should have gone with my gut.

I have a howa in 223, extremely accurate and well made. I have shot and handled the CZ's also and they are fantastic too and great looking.

If they made the 223 in anything other than 1:12 twist I would have bough one...

I do like the action on the Howa, I find its pretty nice, would have been fun to shoot the barrel out and rebuild it into something better.

It is a bummer but I'm going to build up a benchrest AR with a 1:8 twist anyway. All is good.
