Long range target shooting would be my guess...

Default Vortex

Vortex PST but make sure to get the FFP (first focal plane) version. It's a good starter scope in my opinion but there are things it's lacking in low light etc. I have a US Optics that I couldn't be happier with but it's definitely a pricey item.

Vortex PST FFP optics if you want to stay 1k or less...

SWFA 5-20 FFP if you can afford a little more. The glass quality on the SWFA HD scope is a substantial upgrade from both my PST 4-16 and 6-24 scopes. A closer comparison to the SWFA would be the Vortex Razor which is a magnificent scope if you can afford it.

Bushnell HDMR with a G2 reticle is also another SOLID option.

I've looked thru both the bushell and vortex
Both are good to go!
I'm picking the bushell cause of that G2 reticle

Bushnell 3-12X44 FFP with G2DMR is a solid performer for long range use. Max magnification of 12X should be enough for shooting steel out to 1000 yards for most people. If you intend to shoot further, the 6-24X version might be a better option. The 3.5-21X50 HDMR is arguably the best long range optic available for the money, but will blow your budget by about $200.

Vortex Viper PST scopes are also excellent for the money, and tend to offer more features than the Bushnell for a given price point (Zero Stop, Illumination, etc). Bushnell has the better reticle design though with the G2DMR.

If you can go another $100 or so, get a used SWFA 5-20 or a Bushnell DMR.

TRUST ME on this. :P
