Default How to separate M1 Carbine bayonet lug from the barrel band?

I've already drilled out the three rivets and I've already tried putting some heat into it, but the thing is still locked in there tight as can be. Any suggestions on what to try next?

Why are you trying to remove the bayonet lug anyway? Neither Federal nor California laws care about the bayonet lug.

If for some reason you don't like the Type 3 barrel band it would be simpler to replace it with a reproduction Type 2 band http://www.fulton-armory.com/barrelb...fiedtype3.aspx

Easy fellas

Several years ago I picked a Type 3 out from a lot of dinged and damaged examples that were destined for the scrap pile. I'm just now getting around to seeing about how fix it up and fit it to my Ruger 10/22 M1 Carbine Tribute rifle.

To answer my own question, turns out there are two spot welds per side, right between the rivets! They reealllly didn't want this bugger coming off.

Even with the lug temporarily removed, I still don't have enough clearance to slip the narrow part of the band over the Ruger's barrel (or dovetail). Not sure how to proceed from here. I know I've seen other's do this successfully, so I'm wondering what black magic they used.

This is the most authentic M1 Carbine-style stock for the Ruger 10/22. It comes with a barrel band that fits the 10/22 and the sling swivel is on the band, like the original and unlike the other stock on the market http://www.e-sarcoinc.com/ruger1022-m1carbinestock.aspx

That's what I have. But I don't like how flimsy the sling swivel feels. Doesn't seem like it will last over time, especially not compared to the authentic one on the type 3 I have. Besides, I dig the way the bayo lug looks.

The 10/22 barrel is actually larger in diameter than the M1 Carbine's barrel.
So, you either need to machine a shallow groove in the 10/22 barrel to fit or dremel off the locating "c" shaped ring in the M1 carbines barrel band.

Yep thanks already noticed that and have done the latter. I just can't figure out how to spread the grove where the lug used to be far enough to clear the dovetail. Thinking I might need to heat it up, drive a punch of the correct size with a taper to it in, and flash cool it. But then, of course, I've got a channel that's too large for the barrel. This is kinda a toughie...

Got it! Just used some snap ring pliers, and made a custom set of jaws out of two little allen wrenches. Worked like a charm

OP could have found these parts on auction sites for $5.

But it's his gear and his call.

Sad but true.
