Default Are people selling Mosins for profit??

Ive been on the hunt for a Mosin ever since I started my gun collection, about a year ago lol. I live in the LA metro area, and all I can find is Mosins for around $200.. whether it be from a private person or a store. Online, I see them for around $120, and ive seen cheaper on Armslist, just not in my area. So, are people buying Mosins for cheap and re selling in the city for a profit? I dont get why ppl are selling theirs for sometimes triple the retail? They arent rare at all, which is why they are cheap..

i dont understand the question are they supposed to sell them for a loss? and unfortunately they are getting rarer they arent being made anymore so eventually the price will increase as supply dwindles

Well, not necessarily. Not everyone has C&R, and if someone bought theirs at Big5 for $179 plus DROS and tax - around $200 sounds like a fair selling price.
You want a sub-$150 Mosin - get a C&R and buy from AIM or Classic, else - pay $200. It is still a pretty good deal.

I want to find a deal like this. Wow man, you got lucky. Im not rolling in cash like som collectors, but id like to own a Mosin before 1/1/14. $120 is actually really cheap. Id be satisfied if I could find one right around $150 thats not too beat up. I have buddies in the midwest that have found guys with crates selling em for $65 a piece.

"They aren't rare"

I have several that beg to differ

But if you are looking at the $120 prices online and are wondering why the ones in person are all around $200, that's because of shipping and other FFL stuff.

On-line price is wholesale, and then you have to pay shipping and possess a C&R FFL. That $120 MN is more like $150 or so delivered.

a mosin like any other surplus rifle should be judged by many things besides collector rarity.
example i have a 1934 hex tula .i would say most people would say it is a 150-250 rifle.
well the metal is spectacular, the wood is very nice looking the finish only needed wiping off. the bore bright and shiny. all the #s are matching. at the range it shot nice groups and the action was very smooth. so is its value the same as a unknown surplus mosin with a dark bore, flaking shellac, counter bore, very stiff action. i do not think so.

I made a post in the Collectors Exchange sub forum. Hopefully I get some responses. I plan on buying 2 new guns in the near future, a Mosin and a Glock 19. I want/can afford (lol) the Mosin first.

This is my Mosin. There are many like it but this one is mine. I am nothing without my Mosin, and it is nothing without me. So it's worth a bit more...

I was going to buy one of the AIM Mosins, but I looked around at the available ammo and all the inexpensive stuff seems to be either steel or bimetallic, which is not allowed at the ranges around here. Is there a source of cheap ammo that won't attract a magnet?

Your best price is going to be getting a C&R and ordering them direct but there's not a lot of time to be doing that if you don't already have one.

Short of that, the people selling them face to face know you would be paying DROS and sales tax at a store and they pretty much factor that in. Maybe they paid it already when they bought theirs, who knows.

Supply and demand. They are worth precisely what someone is willing to pay for them. Not a penny more or less.

The people selling their Mosins want to recoupe all of their costs (including FFL, transfer fees, whatever else they may had to have paid) and price their rifles accordingly.

The buyers see that the sellers are asking for a price over-retail as far as they can tell (since the buyers see $130 Mosins on the internet).

Find what you like and pay a price that's agreeable to you. As far as Mosins being rare? If it's a 91/30 it's probably not rare in the slightest. It'll probably never be rare. It'll probably never appreciate in value more than to account for inflation. If you want to increase the value of a Mosin buy two with good bores, sporter one and keep the other as an 'investment'. There are some rare Mosins and these are the exceptions to the rules. This really goes for most mil-surps, tons were made, most are not rare and won't be for another 100 or so years at least.

i bought a few big 5 mosins last year for 109 on sale.tax and dros you have a 150 dollar mosin retail.i sold lots of them for what i paid for them. i made some profit on ex snipers and hex tulas. when i decide i want a particular mosin if i have the money i buy it in person. to some people here i paid to much. well i do not let 50 bucks keep me from buying what i want. one M-44 i paid 250 [romanian] another a beautiful 1944 laminated izzy M 44 i paid 400 retail for it. people talk more about the price of a mosin than its details. in my opinion a beater stock, pitting, bluing gone, dark bores are pretty much parts rifles. if you get a real nice mosin for 150 or less good for you.

Everyone I sold I sold for a profit. If I could not make money on them I would not have sold them.

I've picked up mosins from old folks that tell me stories "Son, I bought this back in the mid 90's when they were like $49..." Talk about slap in the face when they were selling it for $150... :-/

Sure. And you could buy an Enfield or Mauser at Woolworth's for $69-$79 in the 1980s. In those days (no internet), ammo for them could be difficult to find and pricey, which made the guns less desirable to many people.

You can sell Mosin Nagants for profit if you buy them buy the crate from Aim Surplus.
You need to call for pricing 888-748-5252.
