Default Milling for 80% lower

I'm located in San Bruno near SFO. I am looking for someone that can machine my 80% and possibly group deal it for 5-10 more. Anyone near me?

ATF has deemed build parties to be illegal and has been going around shutting them down beginning April this year.

Yes, I remember all that sheet happening, and a number of shops where you could also buy the lowers. I had thought that if the shop did not sell any lowers, the CNC could still be done.

Too bad. Wanted to do another one.

That's the impression I had as well.

Something like, you can't machine to 80% and then to 100% in the same house or some such.

ATF just shutdown a company in Orange California that was only doing milling of 80% lower. The ATF agent said that since the shop owns the equipment that they are manufacturing firearms.

It looks like that ATF is shutting down all 80% milling businesses.

I am sorry to hear about the cnc shops being shut down. I have a mill and jig and do my own takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours with finish deburring and doing qc on the lower. To me it is time well spent like reloading. It is a hobby and not top be compared to saving money by do it yourself. It is very self satisfying to be able to use your own skillset to be self sufficient. If you can do it yourself it instills a pride of workmanship and self accomplishment that is hard to beat in day and age of some individuals always opting for the easy way out and having somone do it for you.

This always makes me laugh.

You feel a pride of workmanship and a sense of self accomplishment for finishing up the last 20% of all the work?

I was in the shop waiting to complete my lowers when 3 ATF agents walked in and shut the shop down.

I will wait until the shop owner posts before naming the shop.

Why? If it happened it happened - don't post FUD.

I just called ASNT and they say no such thing happening at their place, everything is business as usuall.

So - what is it?

I don't know who you called but the shop I was in was shut down by the ATF this morning. Like I said I will wait until they decide to announce it.

My point is if you have an 80% your wanting to finish in a machine shop I would do it sooner then later.

huh? oh - you're trying to say something sracastic...

Yeah - the way an internet forum works is you post something, and then its subject to others opinions.

I'm questioning your post regarding the "personal satisfaction" of using an end mill to finish an 80% as opposed to using a CNC to finish it. See - in my opinion, you are only finishing up the last 20%, so really - there isn't much "personal satisfaction" to gloat about.

Now had you told me that you enjoy taking a block of aluminum and milling it into a lower receiver or that you do your own forgings - then I'd tell you "you're the man".

And for the record - the name is Bill, not Jack (see, it says that in my username).

it starts with milling an 80% then some like it so much they end up doing a zero %

No. Proudly I used a CNC.

I wanted to legally own a firearm that is not registered with a serial number that is on a list in someone's office and I wanted to do that the easiest and most professional way possible. To end up with a finished product that looks like a professionally finished store purchased item.

Had I wanted the sense of "personal accomplishment" I would have taken a block of aluminum, downloaded the blueprints for a lower - or taken a lower I currently owned and used it as blueprint, and milled the whole thing.

Its rather silly to stand with your chest all puffed out and act all popmus because you took an 80% completed item and finished it, then try and make yourself out to be "better" than those who chose to do it another way - its silly, its ridiculous - you're only finishing up the last 20% of someone elses work - who by the way - did all the really difficult part of machining (and FWIW - ran it on a CNC machine).

I'm begining to think you have a thing for me..
