Default Choosing a Marketplace Layout

As much as I like the idea of splitting the Marketplace I'm not sure I'm happy with the Long Gun/Handgun split.
There are several threads that have both a handgun and a long gun, what happens to them and do we make/allow multiple threads per user one in each forum?

I need to think about this a bit, as difficult as it is I think a North/South split might be better in the long run.

I can see it working one of two ways:
A stated line, if you're above Fresno it's Nor cal, below Fresno it's So Cal.
Or a seller based option, if you consider where you live So Cal post it in that forum, same for Nor Cal Calgunners.

I'm going to discuss this with the Mods but in addition to that I want to see what the people who use the marketplace prefer.

I agree with the long gun/hand gun combo threads, I think a north/south thread section would be more useful imo.

If I had to choose only one, I pick gun type. North and South is convenient for FTF sellers or buyers, but if seller is willing to ship, I would think it limits his audience.

Just to clarify how this will work.
Since split by location has two possible answers I will be combining the two answers to determine the total votes.
If the combined location split options outnumber the other options then location answer with the most votes is what I'll take to the Staff.

If there simply was an additional *required* location field under/above the thread title when starting a thread, that would help a lot.

Let me add one more to the pot...

Willing to ship in addition to norcal/socal since if the seller is willing to ship, it really doesn't matter where you are in CA.

Norcal/Socal doesn't break it up enough. Socal could be ventura or san diego.

i always kind of thought that anything north of bakersfield was considered NorCal.

location split is best. i hate finding a great gun, no "i'll take it", but dammit, its 10 hours away from me.

lots of threads with handgun AND long guns.

or leave it alone BUT simply make it a rule that your location needs to be in the title.

Location split more useful, because there's enough mix ups on people posting wtb in the fs section. And like others have said who wants to check two adds if your selling long guns and handguns.

hand gun
long gun

geographical split makes browsing harder when sellers are OK to ship.

if multiple guns, it should be OK to post 1 thread per gun if necessary. keeps things organized, titles more accurate and attractive.

Voted: Split by firearm type (Handgun/Long gun)

Mandatory Location (County) in the title or automatic deleted/locked. People who can follow simple instructions tend to be better marketplace users IMO.

If seller has combo of long/hand gun, the burden is on him to post in the appropriate section. It's easier for a seller to copy/paste most of the info (terms, location etc) then it is for buyers to sift and sift through the ads.

eta: or go back to the old way and ENFORCE "location in the title" requirement.

I think the automatic deleted/lock is a little to harsh.

a simpler solution: the sales ad cannot be completed/posted if the seller does not fill up a space allocated for location. if the seller attempts to continue, the location will be highlighted in red to indicate that it needs to be filled out first, just like if you are filling out a billing info on your credit card online when purchasing an item.

If we split..... Then if seller is in NorCal I won't even see it.... And if they are willing to ship..... Could we not so it based on location of where they are willing to meet at?

I say the 3rd option
Or make it like a check list or something when I search so I can say
:hand gun,
:shipping:
:SoCal:
:ect:

Original recipe but we need to get stricter with the geography and it would be good to have an easier way to filter by topic. I don't know if the forum software allows something like that, but a view that shows pistols, or long guns, or shot guns, or C&R that you can select via a check box.

Honestly though, the search works pretty well. And if you want people to only make one ad and list all of their items in that add, you're forced into the single forum model.

Good luck and keep up the good work.

I would agree with your suggestion but I don't think these forums (or any?) are set up with those capabilities, thus it becomes user responsibility to follow the structure.

I think leave as is or by location, I also would like to see an optics section seperated from the parts section . I know it's asking alot but would be nice.

The way before is better. No change needed.

Some sell multiple guns long and short. Some travel between north and south and some buyers travel up and down as well.

I like the idea of North and South. If you are willing to ship or drive either way to accommodate for the buyer location then post same ad on both forums.

i voted for splitting into handguns and long guns.

as long as sellers include location as required, a google search is only a mouse click away....

The advantage to handgun/long gun split: a handgun "daily btt" doesn't get pushed off page one in 40 minutes by the flood of ARs for sale and trade. (Every time I've noticed the "now viewing" numbers, since the split, it appears long guns are getting twice the eyes... perhaps the mods have some actual metadata on this.)

The disadvantage of handgun/long gun split:your daily attempt to get noticed may be missed while your "perfect buyer" checks the 'other' list & of course multiple threads for multiple types.

As Lostncysp9 suggested earlier, adding a "will ship" category might help. You can have "NorCal FTF", "So-Cal FTF" & "Will Ship".

Kestryll & Staff, don't envy your difficult decisions & thank you for working to make the forum a better place.

More categories= more time, more policing, more "reform," and so goes the lifecycle of the California legislature... oh wait- where are we again?

My opinion: It wasn't broken. It didn't need a fix other than actually enforcing the rules already in existence and *maybe* modifying the location rule to include the city in the title. I say return to the past, go full Putin and delete more threads. No location? Gone. Feeler thread? Gone. Posting the same items under multiple accounts? Gone. WTT thread without an indicated value? Gone. Starting a new thread every day and deleting the day's previous? Gone. People will get the idea.

But that's just me. Carry on.

There are a lot of good suggestions here. I like the location mandatory in the title idea. Or split for north and south. I don't think everyone will be happy so be careful starting down the slipping slope. Thanks Kes as this will be interesting to see what we end up with.

I vote to keep it the old way, but make it mandatory to put a location in the title or location field. Makes it easy to see location and whether shipping when you mouse over the ads.

If every ad has the first three digits of the ZIP code and if that ZIP code can be filtered, we'd all be happy. Someone can just see everything if they want, someone else can filter for anything within a wide area (95xxx is central Calif), and another can filter down even tighter (953xx is Stockton/Tracy/Manteca).

Mostly, I want to buy within a 50 mile radius. The good deal in Temecula for an off-list pistol has little interest for me.

It would be less work for you and more informative for us if the specific info was required in the subject heading / Example: Make /Model /Price /Location /Ship?

This seems to be the closest thing I can find for the "require location in thread title" thing: Extra Threadfields It seems to only show the extra fields on the forum view, doesn't actually add to the thread title itself, which is really what we need.

I had no idea vB mods costed money like that. :O (coming from an IPB background)

The old way works well, except for those who do not put what city they are in.

So I vote leave it as it was originally with mandatory location in the title..

Not just "So Cal" or "Nor Cal" either.""actual"" city name = San Diego, Fresno, etc

I actually like it split by long gun/hand gun. It makes it much easier. I would support requiring the location (city/county) in the title.

CA is just too damned big to have it split NorCal and SoCal. Somebody in Sacramento is a 7 hour drive from Eureka, but they're both NorCal. Just either split it long gun/hand gun and require a location in the title or put it back the old way and require a location.
