Default Cowboy Action with .22 caliber?

Hi Folks....newbie to the forum here....I'm interested in doing some SA Cowboy shooting and would like to start with a .22 to keep costs down etc. Are there any groups in the area that do CAS with .22 for adults?

Some clubs run .22LR matches, but I have never seen Cowboys run them.

Thanks. Just thought it would be a fun and inexpensive way to get into the sport and would maybe bring more people out. I'll keep looking.

22 LR might be to high power for Cowboy Action Shooting
Their center fire mouse fart loads are pretty weak!

There is no power floor in cowboy, but I thought it had a minimum velocity of 600fps?

I'm in South OC. I looked up the Cowboys and a few other groups in the SoCal area, but they all follow the CAS rulebook for calibers etc. I'm just looking to have some organized and fun shooting with the single actions and I'd like to pick up a heritage or a ruger at a lower price and have some fun. I just picked up my RIA compact .45 and I'm looking to add a six-shooter to my collection.

Ask your local club!

Don't expect to be officially scored, but most clubs are interested in getting you out at the range, so why the heck not?

Cheers,

I know at Raahagues they have "Steel Challenge" like matches with cowboy and rimfire divisions. I would ask if they could let you use a .22 caliber revolver for the cowboy division.

The Steel Challeng rules describe .22LR pistol, not revolver.

Rimfire Pistol: Open to any pistol firing .22 Long Rifle ammunition (see “ammunition” rule 4.1.2). This event has two equipment divi- sions:
1.
Rimfire Open: This is the Rimfire race division. All legal rimfire firearms are allowed. Optics and Compensators are specifically allowed.

2.
Rimfire Iron Sights: Any Iron-sighted rimfire pistols with- out a compensator, barrel ports or optic sights. Fiber-optic sight inserts are specifically allowed.

and center fire revolver

The problem is the six shooters take forever to reload, and they generally form their own squad for that reason.

And putting a compensator on a 9 mm is just so much manlier.
FYI most people shooting cowboy do not shoot mouse farts.

True. Some do and some dont. All legal Cowboy ammo must meet a minimum and maximum power factor. Theres still lots of shooters shooting "BOOMING" black powder loads using large pistol calibers. I myself shoot semi stout smokeless .45 Colt loads. To answer the original question. Shooting .22s in CAS shooting is only left for kids shooting in the "Buckaroo" catagory and thats 13 and under. Some clubs might let you but if there S.A.S.S sanctioned chances are they wont allow it.

Question about CAS? Op what would you use for the shotgun portion? It is a 3 gun rifle/pistol/shotgun event no?

Apparently, people are very nice and let you borrow guns if you ask!
(bring ammo of course!)
