Default Endlich! Mein Gewehr 98!

Finally got myself my Gewehr 98. Not the best example, but for the price i got it at, I'd say good value for sure (about the price of a Russian Cap K98).

Since next month is the 99th anniversary of the beginning of The Great War I thought it a good time to round out my "Great Powers of 1914" collection.

From the Spandau arsenal, 1914 stamp. Surprisingly good stock. The only fault i can find with it at the moment is the safety doesnt switch on the bolt, it only stays in fire position. No Turkish markings. Imperial proofs on everything and lots of the parts match though not everything. It looks like it hasnt been fired in ages; lots of cosmo in the guts. Good bore.

I'm tempted to get reacquainted with the mauser bolt and strip it all to bits and give it all a good eezoxin' and see if that'll fix er up.

Hehehe! I like the bayonet, you can give any cavalryman a run for his money with that.

Wow! I have wanted a Gew 98 for a long time now. They're tough to find in good shape and at a good price... How much did it cost you?

And, are there still proof marks present on the stock?

Also... what sort of Bayonet is that? I've never seen one that large before. Definitely out-distances both my M1917 and my No. 1 Mk III with theirs' affixed...

Nice mauser and quillback bayo.
How are the numbers on the rifle does it appear to be matching?
These are great value for money in my opinion.

Nice rifle.

I'm fairly certain I recognize your helmet display in the background, you wouldnt happen to be a member of warrelics or wehrmacht-awards would you?

Nice Gewehr by the way!

Got it for $350 + shippin'. Gotta love the C&R! Still some amazing deals on GB if you can get 'em shipped to your door.

There may be a proof on the stock just behind the rear trigger guard screw. at least i think its one. either that or its some odd ding that resembles a crowned eagle (i'm actually not kidding; i cant really tell i was very sure it was a proof when i first looked but i checked it under bright light and now i'm not so sure)

the bayonet is the M1898 and was a standard in 1914. This particular one isnt regiment stamped, but it still fits the rifle which is enough for me.

Nice rifle glennsche, congrats! That bayonet is so long it could skewer two or three soldiers of they were lined up right. I definitely wouldn't want to see that thing heading in my direction.

It looks like a combination rifle/pike. Cavalry charge's worst nightmare.

Nice looking rifle. No safety might signal a previous botched attempt at a trigger job. Hopefully it's just stuck.

thanks so much for all the commentary gents! fun to read.

just for fun i took out the other ww1 era stuff i had which wasnt too far back in the safe (sorry, no mosin, no swiss g11) and affixed their bayonets as well... well ok not for the SMLE because, amazingly, i dont have a ww1 era british bayonet (WTF!!! must rectify)... it looks like the french and germans were glaring over the border at each other after the Franco Prussian war and were having a ... *ahem*... measuring contest as to whose was longest.

Pictured here: SMLE (although technically this is actually a ww2 era aussie Lithgow and not a ww1 era british example), an austrian M1895 long rifle, a Berthier 1907/15 and the Gew98.
