If I had a tag for Los Gatos I'd have a heavy six pointer in the freezer. There were at least 8 big to medium bucks cooling by a school.

C4 for deer and I am an alternate for CA elk, but it would take 4 others who drew a tag to relinquish their tags for me to get one. Colorado season 3 for elk.

My A zone partner called me last night asking me if I was coming. My mom is visiting from Michigan so I told him no. I bet he kills a toad tomorrow and I regret not hunting the AM.

I got within 80 yards of a nice 3 pointer but he busted me as i tried to close the deal sneaking up hill. I probably never really had a chance. Saw this buck last year, rifle season will not be so forgiving for him if he makes the same mistake twice.

I missed my opportunity this morning. Been watching this guy on the move the last couple weeks. Appears this morning but I was too far from him. Got to about 40yds and getting ready to draw then he bolts off. If I had stuck with my original plan of making a stand on the tree I had picked out I would be posting a picture of it now. He went right under the tree and it would've been an easy 10yd shot.

Got on some does last night. Why oh why couldn't the season be open down here already??? Cuz if it was my G-13 tag would a been filled. Started off with a perfect 150yd broadside shot on a big mature doe. Pack of 4 does moved off behind some trees and brush and I moved toward that area to check it out and see where they went. Walked right up on them where they were behind those trees. Had a 15min starting contest at 40yds with a BBD (big beautiful doe LOL) with a clean, unobstructed quartering-to shot. There were a couple others just out of sight behind some bushes that I could hear moving, and they were huffing and grunting at eachother and me.

Oh....and I bagged a couple bunnies while I was out too. (and found some guys hunting license on the ground too)

Technically it's an antlerless tag, so you can a doe or spike buck also.

Yep.....gotta love it. Although I dont really see signs of overpopulation right now in this area, so it prolly makes sense. Between fires, drought, and Mtn. Lions we gotta work with what we got.

It's not like the corn fed hoof rats you get in the midwest with unbundant, stable food sources and plenty of water and no natural predators to speak of.

I remember as kid hiking in the mtn's here and we would see herds of deer all the time anywhere from 10-20 in a group. It was just normal to see them like that all thru the year. You just dont see that here now. You might catch groups of 4-6 here and there on occasion. But alot of time it's a couple here and there.

If i had one of those tags (i personally wouldn't put in for one) but i would never take spike over a doe. Well, unless it had a recessive gene and was large bodied. (older buck or stag)

Southern cali has an A32 tag, which is archery only late season but can be either sex.

I wish that would happen more often. when you put in for a drawing it would be random when it comes to a buck or doe tag.

From the DFG regs:

Quote:
351. Forked-Horn Buck, Antlerless and Either-Sex Deer Defined.
(a) Forked-Horn Buck Defined. For the purpose of these regulations a forked-horn buck is defined as a male deer having a branched antler on either side with the branch in the upper two-thirds of the antler. Eyeguards or other bony projections on the lower one-third of the antler shall not be considered as points or branches.
(b) Antlerless Deer Defined. For the purpose of these regulations, antlerless deer are defined as female deer, fawns of either sex other than spotted fawns, and male deer with an unbranched antler on one or both sides which is not more than three inches in length.
(c) Either-Sex Deer Defined. For the purpose of these regulations, either-sex deer are defined as antlerless deer as described in Section 351 (b), or legal bucks that have two or more points in the upper two-thirds of either antler. Spike bucks may not be taken.
Section (c) is kind of confusing because it includes the definition of antlerless, which includes spiked under 3 inches, but then says spiked cannot be take.

So If I'm reading that right....if they're spiked but under 3 inches they're considered antlerless, but if they're spiked but over 3 inches then they're not legal under either section (b) or (c)?

I read it close to the same way, I thought that you couldn't shoot a spike no matter what tag you have. Slightly confusing.

Why would you shoot a spike buck under 3 inches anyways??

Do any spikes make it through the season in the open hunting areas anyways? I once found 6 dead spikes hunting the during the week following the opener of D-5.

Tough so far....lots of small bucks...bigger bucks are still nocturnal in my neck of the woods. This hot snap should help....need something to get them moving during the day.

Went out pig hunting this morning and scared up a large buck out of his nest, then came across two small spike bucks hanging out together and they let us get within 50 feet and just slowly walked away like we were simply a nuisance.

No pigs.

BBD (big buck down). After 12 arrows and 3 miles.....long story to follow. My bud hit him pretty far back didn't want to lose him so just kept up with him all night. First shot was 430. Started dragging at midnight. Of course in a ravine
