Default So I'm making a ski-limb Recurve Bow.

Saw an instructable where a guy did this and decided to try it out.

So far, I have the riser about 80% complete, both limbs cut (still considering additional backing, or not...) and my string material.

Left to do:

Grind the butt's of the limbs completely flat

Make the limb-seats flat so the limbs sit flush

Drill the holes for the bolts inboth the limbs and the riser

make the bowstring

acquire or make arrows

test shoot

Now, some pictures
(If I'd thought about it thoroughly, I'd have started them uploading BEFORE starting to make a thread, and they'd be done by now...)

Okay, here we go.

Want to see. Looks really cool. Please talk about the tools you used and how you made the string.

Have not made the string yet. I intend to use a pair of cords from a set of miniblinds, wrapped/twisted. I'll be covering the loops at either end as well as the portion where the arrow nocks with heat shrink for durability.

Currently the only power tools I've used were a drill/butterfly bit to start the window, and a chop saw to square the starting block.

I also used:

Clamps to hold the pieces as they glued

Hand saw (wood) for making in-cuts

Handsaw (multipurpose/drywall) to start the cuts on the skis

hacksaw to finish the cuts on the skis

chisels to remove the chunks between the in cuts

rasp/files to round/smooth the general shape out

skinning knife for detail work

square for measuring/marking

Measure tape for ""

Well, bad news... The riser broke, so i'll either need to glue it, and hope it doesn't repeat itself, or more likely, start over... Learned a lot making it though!

Miniblind cord for a bow string? Not a good idea...

Use 2X4's again and expect similar results.

For the bowstring, try getting your hands on some B-50 from Brownwell's if you can. It' a pretty good general string material.

Your going to need some serving material too. I use BCY Halo.

Thanks. I was considering using heatshrink, but I'll look into that. Also was told that a good weave of strong braided fishing line is excellent.
