Default Swiss Straight Pulls vs Mauser: Next Match July 20 Sac Valley?

Okay this would be a better match than the one sided victory of the Mauser team over the Mosin just a few months ago. That match was no contest as the Mauser team won all but one class (tied on one).

The Swiss quality of their straight pull rifles (96/11, 1911 and K31) are legendary. They are known to be tack driver out of the box without the help of burlap, shims or snake oil. These rifles are just bad ***. Ever taken a bolt apart of these rifles? Precision machining from a century ago (except for the K31 which is a little younger). I know of one FSC member with a high dollar ZFK55 Swiss sniper rifle so I'm sure he will shoot it so the Swiss team should do well.

Interest anyone?

Classes are:
As Issued
Swiss Team: sacto929, 1-M-42, arnie19, 0321jarhead
Mauser Team: pro-nra, Vern, Paul

Open Prone (scoped)
Swiss Team: arnie19, 1-M-42
Mauser Team:

Open Bench (scoped)
Swiss Team:
Mauser Team:

Open Iron Target Sights
Swiss Team:
Mauser Team: pro-nra

Okay I will update the original post as people commit to shoot for either Swiss or Mauser. This should be fun and more of a fair match than the Mauser vs Mosin. From looking back at previous match winners, it is split about 50/50 Swiss/Mauser. I will volunteer my shooting buddies Vern and Paul for the Mauser team.

Arnie, I assume you will shoot scope?

gotshotgun, shooting with us on the 20th?

oooo that sounds like an awesome match up!!! To bad the Mosin Freaks will be on the sidelines watching some of the greatest rifles go head to head hehe

I have a feeling the k31 and Swede's M38 Mauser will be a tie actually. Both just excellent pieces of Machinery and just tack drivers. I think it will be a battle for the ages!

Then the winner of this...should go head to head against the Einfield

I'd really like to. I've got a k31 in the mail but I've never really done any precision shooting. Maybe I'll come if I can and just watch and take notes.

Got any GP11 ammo to go with that k31? With those two combined it is like a laser beam. You can't wrong and it's easy to shoot the K31 even at long distance. I don't know how to describe it but it just feels natural shooting it. Such a nice trigger, bolt smooth like the butter...wooo I might have to change my panties and grease down my K31

Unfortunately, no FMJ ammo is allowed on the silhouette range.

So I presume all of you guys are making your own non FMJ ammo for these types of events?

SKSers... very nice rifles! Your K31 looks amazing, my fingers are crossed to land something half as nice.

Most all of us have our own pet loads for our Swiss rifles. The alternative is Prvi or Hornady SP commercial or Norma if you are well off financially.

Ahh I see. well that PRVI isn't half bad either. Hows about the Hornady SP and Norma? I take it they are about $1 a piece?

@Shotgun: I wouldn't worry about the cosmetics of a k31. It's really beauty is the Swiss Engineering and how accurate it is. Just taking the bolt apart is just art. Hopefully, you do get a good one

Prvi is not bad and it is great for reloading. About $.80/round @ Grafs.

The Hornady is loaded with Prvi made brass and Hornady bullets, possibly to a higher standard than the Prvi. About $1.35/round @ Grafs

The Norma is good stuff, but I can't quantify how much better, if any, that it performs over Hornady or Prvi. About $1.85/round @ Grafs

I'm sure there will be a few Mosins of the Finn variety on the line but I'm fairly certain none will be the infamous $90 sub MOA rifles. Too accurate? Maybe.

I have to agree with you that this will be a battle of two outstanding rifles. I believe it will boil down to the ability and experience of the individual shooters behind the trigger.

Most shooters that shoot the Swede will be shooting the M96 long rifle due to longer barrel and sight radius advantage.

That would be cool if we could have and Enfield against Swiss or Mauser. Problem is not too many Enfield on the line. The 1917 is not really and Enfield but a Mauser design. I was thinking more of the SMLE variety which is the true Enfield.

Don't sweat it if you've never done any of these type of shooting as you will be paired up with someone that have done it before. You are certainly welcome to watch, take notes and learn but it is much better if you join us. Don't let the fact that you've never done it discourage you from shooting this match. My first ever shooting this match I won and I suck at shooting and I was not even shooting a sub MOA Mosin. Imagine if I was?

Yes Swedish Mauser is well a Mauser and will be in the Mauser team. In fact myself, Paul and Vern are all shooting M96 Swedish Mausers. Are you shooting a Swede?

I'm taking bribes. For the correct amount, I promise to shoot for the other team.

That is, if I can get by my two broken ribs by then.

You mean an M38 carbine? Never heard of an M36.

You can keep up with us as we are shooting Mauser and not $90 sub MOA Mosin.

All joking aside this match is the perfect battle between two outstanding rifle platforms. There are outstanding shooters on both sides of the fence so this should be interesting to see who will come out on top. My prediction is the match winner will come out of either the master or AAA class (Nick, Steve M, Paul or Vern).

SMLE...Doesn't that mean Swiss Mauser Lee Enfield or is it Swede Mosin Lee Enfield?

Well the match is 10 days away and just a few commitments from both side. I do realize that most shooters at this match do not frequent this forum. I will have to recruit shooters at the match to fill slots.

Anyone else want to commit to shoot for either the Mauser or Swiss team?

So, what's the handicap going to be? The Swiss As-Issued Team is made up of AA shooters (except possibly Arnie) and the Swedish Team is made up of AAA shooters banging on the door of Master class. We all know these old rifles will shoot better than most of us ever will, so the real battle is between the guys behind the triggers....

Oh yeah, how was practice this week, Swedish Team?

Only Ford is offered a handicap. We on the Mauser team are all old retired folks with an average age of 65 we are no threat to anyone.

Practice was good for the rest of the crew. I had a terrible time as I could not hit anything with my M96 of previous known dope. Was hitting low at all distances. Had to raise elevation 50 meters on all targets...weird.

If I can get some SP or HP bullets stuffed into the 7.5 cases I might dust off my K31. Maybe on relay three, though I was going to try out the M1 in .308. Too much to choose from.

How about a cumulative average just for fun: ergo, add up all one teams scores and divide by number of shooters to get the whole picture. The Pauls, Vernes and Arnies (and others) make us mortals irrelevant in the match.

i need to rent a swede and buy some hand-loads please

I really really want to shoot...I promise I will be there someday.

As far as FMJ..sure you can shoot TRUE FMJ on the steel range..meaning copper over lead and no steal or other hardened metal in that bullet. BUT!!!! The next thing is you will need to also bring your own steel farm animals to plink..that is the tougher part.

...must get a swede..... must get a swede...must get press..ect..

Now why do you want to lower your standard to a Swedish Mauser from your crate full of $90 sub MOA Mosins? If you shoot one of your Mosin, you will win the match for sure.:

However, if you insist of lowering your chances of winning the match by shooting a Swedish Mauser, I will let you shoot one of mine.

IMO C&R rifles that did not come with scope when it was made should not have a scope. I'll put you down for the Swiss shooters.

I'm in. This will be my second match. I shot my first one last year and was fortunate to be paired with Ford.

Not sure if I'll bring the K31 or the 1917.

What time is sign in?

Bill,

Ford just got back on the line recently after his trip to the butcher. Now he is up and running shooting away.

Show up around 0800. That way it will give you time to sight up, get paired up and set up your gear. Safety brief around 0830 and 15 minute practice/zero shortly after that. Match starts around 0900.

If you decide to shoot the K31 let me know and I can put you on the Swiss side and if you shoot your 1917 then I will put you down for the Mauser side. Friendly competition and and nothing more than for bragging rights.

I think I'll try the 1917. I shot it for the first time with Ford after the last match and he tried to buy it from me.
