Problem with CCWs in OC is that you need to prove that you are at higher risk of being violently attacked than the rest of the populace.
This can mean
- specific threats that have been voiced against you and your family
- a primary or secondary job where you transport narcotics or high-value items on a regular and/or predictable schedule.

There are also a couple of other aspects - PM me if you have additional questions.

It's not just the getting, it's the keeping. The licenses are only given for SPECIFIC TIMES or ACTIVITIES. So it you say you carry money or jewelry for work, you will get a license only good while at work. Further, they are only good for 2 years and require training, psych eval. firearms eval at the station etc. etc. A major PITA.

Much of that part is not an Orange County 'thing' (except, perhaps, PITA). Two year length, initial issuance and renewal training are state law.

If they're requiring psych eval for renewal, they're supposed to be following PC 27190(f)
Quote:
(2) Additional psychological testing of an applicant seeking
license renewal shall be required only if there is compelling
evidence to indicate that a test is necessary. The cost to the
applicant for this additional testing shall not exceed one hundred
fifty dollars ($150).

Default Building up for this myself

I am getting to be in the same shoes myself. I would like myself and my wife to be able to obtain our CCW here in O.C. I am partially handicap due to an accident and can't get around quick enough these days. At lease my daughter just graduated from Pepperdine University with her Masters in Advance Clinical Psychology. Hey, maybe I will have her do our evaluations..... LOL

Good luck on getting yours and please keep the thread going.

BTW....does it help to have friends in the Sheriff's office? Just curious if they can help "OR HINDER" the process.

Please keep me informed....

Can anyone confirm OC is requiring applicants to complete a psych eval?

Not that im worried about passing, but it seems like something that should be challenged by legal action. If im ok to own a firearm, have good cause to need one on my person during the course of my business or daily routine, there should be no subjective evaluation.

Good luck. My lady has a restraining order against a guy who repeatedly threatened to sneak up behind her and slit her throat and the sheriff still didn't think that was "good cause". I lost faith after that.

Specific to a couple of applications I have first hand knowledge of. No psyc exam.

And, if you look through the good cause statements you'll see that they are issued for more than just transporting valuables. So, the restriction of "course and scope if business" can be very misleading - especially is your good cause has nothing to do with business.

I also know that you don't need to know anyone and you don't have to be a contributor.

I retired from the Coast Guard, which is a federal LE agency. I could carry at work, concealed while working for NATO in Italy, and our LE authority came from 14USC89, same as the FBI and Customs. I wrote all this up, sent in my huge binder full of back up material, training with dozens of weapons, LE training. After sending this all to the OC Sheriff asking for the same courtesy shown to other retired LE officers, I got back a denial that I didn't show cause. -sucks-

OC is the second worst in the state to get a CCW. L.A. county being the worst. Background, Marine, served in Vietnam. 30 years as a Firefighter, last 8 as an armed background investigator, 7 years as a reserve police officer, 4 years on the SWAT team as their paramedic, and now an elected official dealing with a host of problems in the area I serve. I was denied as I could not show specific threat. It is all subjective here. The bar is set so high that off duty police officers should not have CCW's here in Orange County because they cannot show a specific threat, especially if they live in another city from the one they serve. I had a CCW while active as a Reserve Police Officer, now its almost impossible short of a photo of a guy pointing a gun at me or my family. Forget it, move to another county, as long as Huntchens is here, its almost a lost cause.
