Default mini red dots as main optic

Just wondering if there is a reason you don't see many people using a mini red dot (trijicon rmr, burris fastfire, etc.) as a main optic on their AR's or other rifles. Typically I see them used as a secondary optic to a scope, acog, etc. but rarely as the main optic. Just curious.

Depends on the purpsoe for the rifle.

ACOG and traditional scopes provide magnification where as the RMR/Fastfire do not. the ACOG/scope route also offers various reticles including drop compensation.

Comparing them to 'traditional' RDS such as an EOTech EXP or the Aimpoint offerings, there are trade offs. RMR's are lighter but have a smaller viewing area. Battery life is much shorter on the RMR v. a ACET type Aimpoint. Etc...

Just depends on what you need/want.

Another reason is that mini red dots typically can't be cowitnessed with iron sights.

My vortex razor red dot is sized similar to the RMR (priced similar too)

It is the primary optic on my AR. It has perfect cowitness with A2 front post and troy rear with a 1/2" riser.

I think mostly it's people that have a driving desire to be 'tacticool' copying what the high speed low drag crowd use. Even if it means buying a cheap piece of junk nc star acog looking thingy at turners.

My Vortex razor runs about $480 if you shop around. It aint cheap. Miculek runs one on a 45deg angle mount with a scope primary. Mine is the primary, with back up iron for close range only.

The big plus for vortex, is a lifetime warranty even on red dots/electronics. Most other brands have a 1 or 2 yr warranty on red dots.

My other AR is a dedicated medium/long range scope only.

I think it's foolish to try and make 1 rifle do everything. It does everything poorly, and nothing well.

2 AR's- 1 short range, one long range, they both excell at their purpose.

You don't see it more often because not many people are doing it yet.
It's a great idea, though.

I am rocking a RMR as a primary on my socom. Not needing a cheek riser was the main reason for designing the mount but a small optic sure does maintain the beauty of the gun.

This is what I'm talking about. My buddy has an eotech and I have an aimpoint micro and we were talking red dots and just wondered why we didn't see many micro red dots on AR's as the primary optic.

Seen your rifle before & I really like the concept, I just can't get over loosing my iron sights. Maybe if I ever get a socom 16 since I don't really care for their sights in the 1st place.

I believe you can still co-witness your irons on an AR with the right mount like a Trijicon RM34.

For Marines, we use RMR as a quick reference on the trijicon machine gun optic. Just used to rapidly engage up to 300 meters, not much more accurate after that distance without use of the scope.

Co-witness? Who needs it?

Just kidding...

Let me stick my 2 cents in here. I have been shooting for over 50 years.
IT always comes down to-what distance and how heavy the bullet AND "can you afford to shoot it". YOU must shoot your weapon--so your not looking at which way the saftey moves when you need to be pulling the trigger.
At a buck or 75 cents a round for .223,5.56 and now 22lrs at 15 cents/pricy!!!.
SO-look at a AK74-about 25/30 cents a round. However S Bill 47 on bullet butons,S Bill 53 on giving up information when you buy ammo,S Bill374 on detachable magazines and S bill 396 outlawing all the above over 10 rounds not to forget S bill 567 on "big scary black guns". These S Bills "May" just take care of all solid choice's and other options.
So choose well-one platform does not do it all (per Postal above& myself)-look at the Vietnam nightly reruns for .223 against 7.62.

Does the Aimpoint H1/T1 qualify as a mini dot?

Not really, there are thousands of people who use the TI/H1, myself included. I was really talking more about something like these: http://www.trijicon.com/na_en/produc...ct1.php?id=RMR or http://www.midwayusa.com/product/183...ht-3-moa-matte
