Default Surplus Ammo - How much 'surplus' really is available?

With the panic coming to an end, I really got into the mil-surp rounds... 7.62x54 and 5.45x39... How much of this is truly available?

Can I expect similar pricing in 5 years (+ inflation) or is it a good idea to buy crates of them now?

I'm sure there is more out there than we can fathom. Whether it's destined for the US is the question

Parts of eastern Europe have them in abundance. Anyone tried to go over there and negotiate an import in to US?

Both are still in production and common use with Russia, unless an import ban hits on the fed level there is nothing to worry about.

It doesn't really matter - it always dries up. When I was a kid everybody talked about warehouses full of Mausers and countries with uncountable rounds of 8mm. It's about all gone. Nobody believed the huge amount of 7.62x25 produced for pistols and PPSH smgs would dry up for years but it's gone. 9 Mak ammo, 7.62x39 surplus, .303 ... long list.

If you shoot it, stock up whenever you find a good deal. Someday it will be gone.

This ammo would go well with all the Mosins he sold.

I'm still concerned about the ammo... But I also do not want to make the panic worse by buying up all I see...

If you're the seller, you want everybody to think it's scarce, then you can get a better price at the auction. It will probably come in, dribbles and dabs, never get near creating a glut..

I would imagine that the surplus we buy is but a fraction of whats out there. Considering that stuff is still in production and probably fueling several dozen armed conflicts around the world as we speak. Why would you ever think it'll dry up?

Stock them up when you can at a price you can afford. I hate to say it but there are more important things in life than guns and ammo. Buy a tin every two month and you should be fine. That's what I plan on doing.

It's really not clear, but other surplus calibers have dried up over the years. If you have the space and can get some without going into debt there's no reason not to get plenty now. It's certainly not going to get any cheaper.

For Russian calibers? Probably more then you could imagine.

So...never heard of this tool 'Expertish' before today, and have two questions after reading through one of the linked threads -

How, um, did this dude manage to not have an 'accident' over the last year? I've found that people who lie to me and steal my money are very accident prone. Just asking.

iTrader lists him as 96% (!) So what good is iTrader then?

^ I found shelves of em, 12 per spam can.

Comparing these rounds to more or less practically dead calibers like 303 or 8mm is silly. I will say it again, these calibers are still being produced and used by the Russians and others.
Even the ancient 54r or the effectively replaced x39. X39 still sees limited use with the Russian MIL and is common with police units still. So unless there is a ban (check your surp crystal balls) or through some twist of of bizzare international politics Russia goes NATO it is unlikely that these calibers are going anywhere.

Im afraid of the same thing. Just now got another 2 cans. $0.23/rd. SHIPPED is not a stellar deal but it keeps me from using too much of my x39 which costs more to replace.

True enough, but Im willing to bet modern manufactured will cost more than 40 yr. old surplus when it comes to market.

Hope Im wrong.

TOUCHÉ!

Good point, but I cannot find x39 for $0.23 since before 2013. I hope to see it again, but if CA = no 'net sales, I dont think I could find it at that price point in a local retail establishment.

Last time I looked, bear in 54r was pushing $0.70 per. Havent looked for a while....

As always, I hope Im wrong.
