Default Aimsmall Arms QD.308 80% Jig instructions

Peck drill method: Use light pressure on drill bit and drill a small amount (.100-.200") and back the drill out of the hole half way or more to remove drilling chips. Continue until the desired depth is reached or the hole drilled through the entire receiver (side holes).

End Mills and Guide Plates: If you are able to set up your end mills so that the smooth shoulder of the end mill sticks out far enough from the chuck you can run that smooth part of the end mill right up to the guide plates, just be carefull that you aren't cutting into the guide plates.

Measuring: The jig is there to hold the 80% and help guide you, a set of calipers and some blue prints should also be used during the milling process to keep everything within the specs. Measure twice, cut a little, measure again, cut a little etc. etc. Go slow until you've done a few of these, it gets faster as you get better at it.

Photo below is shown to illustrate the gap between the top plates and side plates that must be maintained when using QD.308 80%'s with this jig.

Step 1 for QD .308 lower
Place 80% reciever into jig as shown. Using the side plate marked "QD SIDE" peck drill the holes for the trigger/hammer pins and the selector using a 5/32" drill bit for the 2 small holes and a 3/8" drill bit for the larger hole. Peck drill all the way through the reciever but DO NOT drill through the other side of the jig (side plate marked "TM SIDE") as the holes on the other side are for use with TM .308 80%'s only and are in a different location then the QD side holes are. DRILLING THROUGH BOTH SIDE PLATES MAY DAMAGE YOUR RECIEVER.

Step 2 for QD .308 lower
Using the top plate pictured below install the 2 locating pins as shown and secure the plate with the 4 bolts provided but note that the small gap between the top plate and the side plates must be maintained, do not overtighten the top plate. The pins should go in easily, if you have to force them you're doing something wrong, make sure the side plates are on the 80% all the way, make sure you are placing the pins in the correct locations. Next place the jig in your vice and snug it down making sure it's flat in the vice.

Next use a 1/2" drill bit to remove some of the material in the hammer/trigger area by peck drilling 3 holes to a final depth of 1.250" (see picture). Next use a 3/8" drill to remove some of the material in the small corner of the hammer/trigger pocket by peck drilling 1 hole to a final depth of 1.250" (see picture). Next use a 3/8" end mill to finish this area of the pocket, slowly plunge the end mill to half the total depth of the pocket then slowly follow the contours of the guide plate without actually touching the guide plate. Repeat at full depth (1.250").

Step 3 for QD .308 lower
Using the top plate pictured below install the 2 locating pins as shown and secure the plate with the 4 bolts provided but note that the small gap between the top plate and the side plates must be maintained, do not overtighten the top plate. The pins should go in easily, if you have to force them you're doing something wrong, make sure the side plates are on the 80% all the way, make sure you are placing the pins in the correct locations. Next place the jig in your vice and snug it down making sure it's flat in the vice.

Next use a 3/8" drill to remove some of the material in the rear take down lug pocket by peck drilling 2 holes to a final depth of .525" (see picture).
Next use a 3/8" end mill to finish the pocket, Slowly plunge the end mill to half the total depth of the pocket then slowly follow the contours of the guide plate without actually touching the guide plate. Repeat at full depth (.525").

Step 4 for QD .308 lower

Using the top plate pictured below install 1 locating pin as shown and secure the plate with 2 of the bolts provided but note that the small gap between the top plate and the side plates must be maintained, do not overtighten the top plate. The pin should go in easily, if you have to force them you're doing something wrong, make sure the side plates are on the 80% all the way, make sure you are placing the pin in the correct location. Next place the jig in your vice and snug it down making sure it's flat in the vice.

Next using a 5/16" end mill center the end mill in the trigger slot guid plate and slowly plunge the end mill until it has penetrated the bottom of the fire control pocket. Next slowly follow the contour of the guide plate without actually touching the guide plate.

Blue Prints for QD .308 lower

TM lowers.

Use the directions above but place the pins as shown here and use the side plate marked "TM SIDE" for your side holes. DO NOT maintain the gap between the top plates and side plates as you would with the QD 80%, for TM you will set the top plates flush against the side plates as shown in the photo below.

Step 1 for TM lowers:

Step 2 for TM lowers:

Step 3 for TM lowers:

Step 4 for TM lowers:

Default quinton jig

Is the depth on the upper shelf supposed to be drilled to .630"D as instructed in the photo or is it .525"D as instructed by the blueprints.

.525"D my mistake, .630 would be for a AR15. If you did drill to .630" it won't hurt anything but it would show a little bit of the top of the selector hole, I've done that before and everything still works fine. Corrections have been made to both the instructions and the photo to reflect the proper measurement of .525"

Thanks for pointing that out

Also, Aimsmall Arms AR15 jigs are in the works right now, I do sell AR15 jigs currently too but we are making our own which will be very similar to the AR10 ones we already make, they should be done in a few weeks.

Anything else different when doing TM vs QD than you have already posted to date (ie use TM side, etc?)

Just wanted to mention that I'm doing another run of the .308 jigs. I should have them available again in a few weeks. I'll start a new for sale thread when they're ready and post a link here for anyone interested.

Default aimsmall ar15 tutorial?

Any plans for a pictorial with your jig and a quentin AR15 80%er? I purchased your jig but have had a hard time finding any info, tips or techniques. I would at least like to hear your recommended bit and endmill sizes.

You should have received a copy in the box with the jig, not sure why you wouldn't have? Please PM me your email address and I'll send you the PDF version. Thank you, Jerry

Anyone know off hand, what size / length endmills and drill bits are needed for this?

I think it's 5/32 and 3/8 drills and I thought the endmills were 3/8 diameter, and maybe something smaller for the trigger slot...but am not sure.

OK, so my question to the group is, does it matter which jig side i use for the 80% lower i have? what is the difference between the qd and tm side\plate setting. does that mean i have to buy qd lower parts kit if i use the qd drill pattern. Any help would be appreciated.

As far as i can see both QD and TM receivers are DPMS compatible. so what change is there between the 2 side plates and the gap on the mill plates.

Also maybe the prints would help in this but i couldn't find a TM print to use as reference.

Everything is .040" forward on the QD lowers.

I have heard this question before. The problem is that DPMS pattern does not mean that the lowers are going to have the same specs in all areas, it just implies that the lower will work with DPMS pattern parts such as the lower parts kit and the upper receiver.

The reason there are different side plate drill guides for TM and QD is beacuse the FCG pocket location is different between the two, this is also why the top plates have the locating pins to be placed based on which lower you have.

I think the answer you really need is this one...

Carefully mark the selector hole location on both sides of your lower using a sharpie and the jig then look at the hole for the selector detent and see which mark lines up centered on that selector detent hole. Use the side plate that lines up the mark and detent hole and the top plate positions that correspond with the side plate you used.

In addition, you can setup the top plates and carefully scribe clean marks onto the top of your 80% then start measuring to figure out what you need to do, PM me for more details on this if needed.

Hope this helps

You can also try using a appropriate size transfer punch with your jig (mark it very lightly) in this case a 3/8 (.375") or even a drill bit (be very carfull). You can also try Prussian Blue spray and spray it over the drill bushing to get a Idea where the hole location is with the corresponding safety detent hole is...

Good luck guys, great thread and work Aimsmall !

To the best of my knowledge [95%] the TM version of the jig should be
the correct one, I would have to give him a call to be 100% certain.

Good luck.

I know this is an old thread but I have a rather important question. According to the instructions when drilling the triger pin hammer pin and safety holes you are not to drill all the through because the holes on the other side are for a differnt reciever. My question is how do you drill the holes for the other side of your reciever?

(Quote) Peck drill all the way through the reciever but DO NOT drill through the other side of the jig (side plate marked "TM SIDE")
Sounds to me like he said do not drill into or through the SIDE PLATE on the other side, but drill through the Receiver. Just be careful...
