Default STI Lawman 4.0 9mm 1911

I just did the SSE on an STI Lawman 4.0 in 9mm yesterday. I have to say, I was VERY impressed with the fit/finish/ and tightness of this pistol. I knew it would be good, but I did not imagine it would be this nice. I will post a very detailed review as soon as my ten days is up.
I have been working ON, WITH, and AROUND firearms for the past 16 yrs so I am going to give my honest opinion of this weapon. I also intend on doing a head to head againsh other semi custom 1911s very soon.

Here is my initial evaluation of the pistol,

I opened the box and immediately noticed the blueing was nicely done with a matte blued frame and the slide had polished blued flats. The instant I picked up the pistol I immediately noticed how solid it was built (like a brick)....

The first thing I did was attempt to move the slide vertically and horizontally on the frame from the rear, then from the front....there was ZERO movement at all. I pressed on the barrel hood, like a bank vault, and attempted to check for front end barrel movement, zero.

Racking the slide was smooth as butter and the lube from the factory was very watery, so it will be even more smooth with decent lube. The front strap and MSH were checkered and the checkering was nicely done, I really like the French boarder along the top of the front strap checkering, it is a nice touch. The front strap is high cut and the pistol sits nice and low in the hand, another nice touch.

The barrel fit is impeccable and snicks in and out of battery, it is not overly tight so that it needs to fire fit, and it is certainly no where close to loose. The feedramp was polished mirror smooth. I have felt higher priced guns from other semi custom makers that didnt feel this good, but there are reasons for the lower price point..I will speak on this later.

I like the Novak cut adjustable rear sight but I may change them out, I do think the front sight is a little wide but that is simply my personal observation.

Now the things that I noticed that MAY bring this weapon to being slightly less overall quality or fit than the other big semi custom makers.....
The thumb safety was positive, BUT (this happens on wilsons, Baers, and nighthawks as well) This is my pet peeve...When the hammer is down, the thumb safety can be moved upward just enough to impede the slide from being moved to load a round. This is why I use SVI optifit safeties in my builds(they do not allow upward movement with the hammer down.)

second, the trigger broke nicely at about 4lbs but the slight amount of creep was distracting, it felt similar to others in this price point and class (nothing 5 minutes with a stone cant fix)

Third, the beavertail safety was not fit smoothly to the tangs on the frame, (all baers, wilsons, and nighthawks are fit impeccably in this area) Not that it is anything more than a slightly noticable difference, I mean it isnt ill fit or anything, it just isnt PERFECT.

All in all, I am very impressed with the quality I received for the dollars invested. I really wish they offered it in a ambi safety version for us Lefties. But I have an ambi on the way, so that handles t hat.

Hopefully she shoots as good as she looks.

I can not wait to get some pics and take it to the range

TO BE CONTINUED.........(more detailed writeup and range report coming soon)

Nice!

Quick Question, does it have MIM Parts? If so what parts? Not that I am saying MIM is utterly horrific, I am just curious.

I do not have the pistol in possession I am in my 10 day wait. From everything I have been able to read people have said that only the magazine catch is mim. . other report stated that the magazine catch and the firing. Pin stop are... as soon as I pick it up I will certainly do a detail strip of the weapon and report back adding to my initial report

Nice purchase. . . . is this your first 1911 in 9mm? I too have been looking at the STI lawman.. but with the 5.0. I am curious to hear your thoughts when you shoot it.

STI's and SVI's aren't the first names that come to mind when people talk about semi-custom 1911's. However, I strongly urge everybody to at least rent//borrow/steal one to try.

I had 3 non-STI 1911's before finally getting into STI's. Since then, I've sold 2 of my non-STI's and will be selling the final one very soon.

I'm not sure if any small parts on your gun are MIM, but if any are, they will be the small ones that are very cheap drop-ins to replace. The 3 most important and expensive pieces, the frame, barrel and slide fitting are by far the most important. Of course the trigger is also important.

I also highly urge everyone to try the STI/SVI double stack "2011"-style guns. The grip angle is identical to a 1911's and the grip diameter/dimensions are very similar. Parts compatibility is 90%+

Does the Lawman qualify as a semi-custom?

From everything I have reads , it does. It is hand built, every part, even the small ones are hand fit. I can tell you, it is quite nice, and I have had a LOT of `1911s, a few in 9mm too. I dont care what title it has or whatever...it is surely a LOT of gun for the money.

You should go get the current edition of "Guns" magazine (June 2013). A 9mm STI (5.0) is on the cover and there is a nice write up on it.

Good friend of mine had issues with her single stack. She decided to sell it and her husband is building her a new 9mm for competition. She is good at clearing malfunctions for sure.

I personally don't like the look of the STI guns but only hear great things about the quality, fit, and finish.

Congrats on the purchase. Definitely let us know how it shoots after you get it out of jail. I'm looking to gift myself a Lawman 5.0 in 9mm for my birthday next year

Congrats! Those STI's are the way to go. Cant beat them for the money. About MIM parts, I'm not sure bout the fp stop but slide stop/take down, grip safety and thumb safety are MIM on my STI's.

Can someone explain to me why MIM is so looked down upon?

My Edge has at least 8k and none of the MIM parts are going bad. These arent slow fire indoor range rounds either, they are 3gun, uspsa, run n gun fired rounds. I had a Kimber with its cast frame and MIM parts that held up fine as well.

Sorry to drift off topic. But congrats on the addition!

What about a write up of some sort?

I have done a writeup on my initial inspection, When I get ti out of jail I will do a more extensive writeup and range report. It will be lengthy and I have 500rds ready to go for the first outing. Look for the report in about a week /week and a half

STI's have dominated USPSA/IPSC/Steel Challenge and 3 gun competitions since their inception in 1990 and really exploded when Strayer designed the wide bodies in 1993. Any major match will see about 65% STI's, 25% Glocks. Even Glock champions like David Sevigny and KC Eusebio run wide body STI's

I read your original post as when you 1st inspected it at the store when you paid for it. Later posts said you were in the 10 day wait and I didn't see an edit date in the OP.
