Default Buying a Firearm in Canada

I was at dinner with a friend who said that he had read an article which stated that is is fairly easy to buy a firearm in Canada. Surprised me to hear that and I told him I didn't think that that was the case... but I didn't know for sure.

So I thought I would ask here, hoping that we might have some members who live, or lived in Canada. What is the process you have to go through to purchase a handgun, rifle, shotgun? Is the process similar across the country or does it vary by region?

Thanks for your help!

Fairly easy?

It's easier to buy firearms in CA, then in Canada.

Wow, if i recall correct you need a permit to buy guns and ammo, magazines only hold 5 rounds, but SBR's are less regulated there.

Generally speaking, firearms laws there are national in scope. I'm going to gloss over some stuff in the following, but it'll give you the flavo(u)r...

Buying a firearm in Canada involves:

- passing a safety course(s), passing a background check, getting a license (PAL) that allows you to buy guns.

- buying guns.

Dealer sales are easy:

1) in person - longarm purchase - show the PAL, dealer verifies, pay for and take the gun home. 5-10 minutes.

2) online/mail order - longarm purchase - dealer verifies PAL details, sends guns to licensees home.

3) restricteds ( basically, handguns ) - mail order/online sales used to have the dealer send the gun to the buyer's local police station, where the buyer would then pick it up and take it home. I understand that now, restricteds can be sent directly to the licensees home address...which is pretty swell.

No waiting periods, no 1 handgun a month nonsense, no roster ( but new handguns with barrels less than 4 inches can't be purchased ), no mag capacity limit for rimfire rifles or non-semiauto centerfire rifles, centerfire semiauto rifles are limited to 5, centerfire pistol to 10, manually operated SBR/SBSs are considered normal longarms, semiauto SBR/SBSs are in the same category as pistols, and some kinds of "assault rifles" are banned by name and type...but you can own a Tavor or SIG Black special... go figure.

The PAL license is effectively a DROS that gives you a 5 year window to buy. So while the license is moderately harder to get - since you have to do a real safety course - once you have it it's much easier to buy guns in Canada than it is in California. Since the PAL is valid nationwide, you can buy from anyone, anywhere in the country. And since online sales are legal....

These guys are a solid vendor:

Chinese SBS -> http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/det...-Gauge-14.aspx

HK MR308 -> http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/det...rel-Black.aspx

Barrett 50 -> http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/det...32-Barrel.aspx

"Steyr TMP SBR" -> http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/det...e-Tan-9mm.aspx

Daniel Defense Factory SBR -> http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/det...DE-RIS-II.aspx

Oh, and Cabelas in Canada sells SBSs:

Not easy but not hard either once you have your PAL license. We can have SBR's but handguns less than 4.15" are prohibited for some reason. Mags for handgun restricted to 10, rifles are 5 round mags unless you get the LAR-15 AR mags than can hold 10 cause there "pistol" mags. No CCW. Check out canadiangunnutz.com
