So apparently i can't find any ak builders as of now. People seems to be to busy. So i figure maybe i'll start to doing bits and parts and maybe down the road i can get some help to do a complete build.

Anyone in sac that has experience on refinishing the wood for ak stock?
Plz pm me.

What kind of finish are you looking for? Im actually doing some AK furniture right now. It will looks just like the one in the pic, except much darker.

Sand it with 180grit to even the surface out, then finish it with 500grit to smooth everything out.

Wipe it down with a dry rag, and start putting some stain in it (just read the back of the can)

Let it dry for a few days and finish it with your topcoat of choice, tung oil or Urethane (my only choice)

I used min wax wood stain ($4) And its good for many many stocks!

The topcoat is PPG D8152 Glamour Clear ($240/gal) High quality clear is very important.

End result....

I refinished my SKS using extra fine steel wool and WATCO furniture oil. It came out just fine, but getting the Russian varnish off was the real pain. Refinished my Parker Hale deer rifle and had an even worse time getting the limey varnish off. I used the Birchwood Casey stock refinishing kit, and was pleasantly surprised at the great job it did. Beautiful oil finish!

This is how I refinished one of my stocks. If I were to do it again, I think I would have applied more stain, but I was impatient and wanted it NOW! It looks good, but I would have liked it to be a little deeper red.

This picture is kinda washed out from the sun and looks more brown than it is.
