Sutter County

1.) Make appointment with instructor
2.) Take Class - (2) 4 hour courses in the evening. Class one day and shoot the next.
2.) Apply for LTC at sheriffs office, pay and live-scan. You also have to bring in your firearms for them to check. Now at the time I applied I was just a walk in and met with and spoke to the sheriff that day. Now I think you have to make an appointment.
3.) wait...30 days for processing
4.) get a call and pick up your permit.

the first time I got my LTC it took about 3 weeks. they tell you 30 days just in case though. for the renewal. we have to take (1) class and re-qualify with the firearm and again it is just a walk in and they give you a new permit right then and there. no wait. hope that this sheds some light on a truly "easy" County.

Mtn folk,
My wife and I have the same three guns on our permits all three are registered to me. Permits are issued by San Bernardino County. We are up for renewal soon, maybe they have made a change? I will call them tomorrow and ask.

Getting pretty close to a year from start to finish.

Yes, I called a couple weeks ago. They told me it would take the full 90 days. Hopefully today's the day since yesterday was a holiday.

Fingers crossed..

Sorry typo, my interview was on 3/21 and range day is on 6/15. I don't know if neighbors were contacted? They haven't mentioned it if they were.

Interviewed 3/6.....range date 6/15 in Devore. Had the option of Apple Valley on 6/1 but opted for Devore for a couple of reasons. And yes, they talked to a couple of my neighbors but never contacted the references.

I don't' get it. My interview was February 6th, still no call. I call every 2 weeks and its always the same thing "still in process". Either my file got misplaced or they don't process them in the order they were received.

I feel ya! I don't understand how they process the information. I thought by law you had to be notified pass or fail within 90 days..

Every time I call it's the same too. Either waiting for DOJ or neighborhood check..

I must have read into my conversation with the sheriff.

I have my class this Saturday on the first in victimville. I took it because it was a Saturday and is cheaper to pay the Extra $25 for victimville than do it in Devore during the week and miss a day of work. She may have said 15th and I heard 18th.
Good luck y'all! Hope everything works out well.

I asked my bf if his class on 6/15 was a range class and if he was told to bring his gun, but he said no, it's just the classroom portion.

I think San Bernardino is only a one day event.. The papers state to leave gun(s) in your vehicle while you do the 'classroom' business then, once you head out to the range, you bring your pistols and what not..

Mtnfolk,

Good luck!!! Please share your experience with apple valley. I belong to that gun club and is only 10 min away from my house. I plan to do mine there as well.

Take the firearm and have it locked up in the vehicle. This is qualifying and the paperwork I got clearly states how much ammo to bring for each firearm you're qualifying with. Otherwise, this training wouldn't necessarily need to take place at a range.

Also, you need 2 magazines or 2 speed loaders for each firearm, a holster, eye and hearing protection along with the ammo. At least that's what the flyer shows.

Hahaha! That could be very possible! Lmao! Maybe they clear the people closer to HQ first. Although I'm only 30-35 min away.

OK, so I took my CCW class today at the Apple valley gun club.
I have to say it is a nice range and if you are local to the area, it would be a good place to be a member. alot of good folks there.

My instructor was Captain Jon. He is a Captain with the SBDCO Sheriff and a very mellow, down to earth, good guy. Very professional and patient.

Our class consisted of 21 or 22 people. there were three husband and wife teams. one brother and sister team, and two women there alone, and a man that was probably in his mid 70's. the point was made by the instructor that he was happy to see women there.

in a nut shell, the course consisted of what you might expect.

-transportation laws. vehicles/ airports and the extra check in time required
-gun selection for CCW
- gun fit
-Ammo selection
-no gun mods outside of grip, sights, and approved length of pull adjustments
-night sights. (highly recommended)
-cleaning (very brief)
-storage and safety devices and the related laws
-how to avoid situations
-the legal use of deadly force
-the liability of the use of deadly force
-insurance policies and attorney advice

the class started at 8:00 am an was over at 3:00 pm. we got a 10 minute break every hour and 45 minutes for lunch.

range time started at 3:00 pm and went to 4:45.

the range consisted of 10 rounds per gun with one magazine change or speed loader reload for revolvers each. distance was 5 yards. targets were provided.
Most of the range time was focused on range safety. i had my electronic ear muffs which made it nice to hear the instructions. they will tell you everything you need to do before you get there so you know what to expect and what to do. all you have to do is listen and follow directions. I was in the army so this had already been beaten into my scull. dont load before they tell you to, properly reload, and clear your weapon when you are done. it is actually very easy, 5 yards is no test of marksmanship and is almost too easy. But you have to realize this is self defense and not sniper training. You will hit the target and pass. I dont think failure is possible

One by one you will be called to your target and a little discussion will take place. the worst case is you will hear is, you are anticipating, tugging, or what ever. if you are a noob, you will be told to practice. if you are experienced, you will be told to add stress from a timer and practice. after it is done, you will have an after action review and told to practice. and you might be even told to practice.

I have been around guns my whole life. I am not a pro, i dont compete. I do shoot alot. what I took from this class is first, The SBDCO Sheriff is very supportive of CCW to the point of almost encouraging it. Second, Get yourself some financial coverage, third, Have a lawyer well versed in criminal homocide on speed dial, take some self defense classes if possible. and last practice, practice, practice.

all in all it was a good experience. but I feel that getting your CCW permit is about equal to a 16 year old getting a drivers license. it is just the first step in being responsible and proficient. you should really consider further training.

I wish everybody the best of luck.

CONGRATS!!! Sounds like a great experience! If I recall correctly, I think you pick up your permit now, rather than receiving it in the mail.

Man, I can't wait!!

No, it still comes in the mail. Gun changes for renewals are picked up in person.
