Default Did you remember to prep for Aunt Flow?

So you have enough beans and bullets to feed and protect your family of five for 10 years. But if there's even one woman in your household, did you remember Aunt Flow?
She will be coming to visit during SHTF and this is a guarantee.

There have been some threads in the past about the practical uses (and multiple uses) of tampons and pads:
and let's not forget the Art of Manliness's' "Why yes, that is a tampon in my mouth".

Why?
I can already hear some men saying 'women in the old days used an old cloth for years and just washed and reused it'.
Sure and entire civilizations wore loin cloths for centuries but I don't think any of us are stocking up on loin cloths instead of modern clothing.
Washing an old cloth is a last resort. Modern products are more sanitary and clean, end of discussion.

What to buy?
Tear the top off of a box of products that they currently use and go buy THAT brand and THAT type.
Hopefully your ladies use generic brands and that will help for cost reasons. If not, then Sams/Costco will be a savior.
If you are a cheap bastard then Dollar Store items are an option but they would fall under the 'anything is better than nothing' category unless your lucky enough that the ladies in your life actually use Dollar Store products already.

What size?
Most women use different sizes of products depending on the point in the cycle, go for the larger when stockpiling. It's always better to have too much than too little absorption regardless of the point in Aunt Flow's visit.

How many do I need?
Just ask how many products they use per month and do the math. If you can't ask your 14 year old daughter, then just watch the box(es) and you'll get an idea.

Other options?
The obvious problem with these products is that they are disposable. Meaning when your supply runs out, you're kinda SOL and resorting to the old cloth.
But there are some alternatives. Products out there exist that are sanitary and reusable such as the Diva Cup (this is not the only company that makes them) and you can buy them at most all grocery/drug stores. You simply boil to clean. Pretty easy.
Some women have good experiences with them, others do not and find them uncomfortable or problematic. Many women that try them also modify them by cutting off the extra 'stem'. It's really something that a woman would need to try out for themselves. Every woman is shaped differently and it's something that they would want to try before SHTF.

Bottom line is this. Prep for everyone's needs.

If this thread helped at least one fellow calgunner, it'll be worth the idiotic replies I'm sure this thread is going to get.

And we're off to a great start!

In all seriousness I was talking a male friend of mine recently. He was so excited to share what all he's gotten for him and his fiance in terms of earthquake preparedness for when the 'big one' hits.

He was so excited. I almost felt bad when I shattered his moment by asking "so where's the tampons?".

He gave me this head tilted puppy dog look and I think I detected a faint whimper.

I realized then that many male preppers prolly hadn't ever considered this piece of the puzzle.

Maxi pads do double duty as AB Pads, so you should have a good stash on hand for both reasons.

This is something most guys overlook. I brought it up with my wife when assembling our BOB's. At first she was set back by the fact that I had asked her how many she uses on a normal cycle and asked for that amount to put in the bags, make sure to place them in a water tight bag. And put some baby wipes in with them she will be very happy to have them.

Also make sure to have a good multi-vitamin on hand. The menu selection that will be available might not meet all the needs she will have.

Great post and good idea to pass along.

Happy to hear some guys actually thinking about this.

Great point about the water tight bags, I should have mentioned that... glad you did.

The vitamins go for every member of the household for sure. SHTF food will most likely not be complete. Costco has cheap one-a-days or even Dollar Store for super cheap alternatives.

I had an extra messenger back so I was packing a get home bag for me and she started her "wow, another one. Might as well make luggage..." and crap. She grabbed my 3 people 72 hour BOB and said "youre gonna carry that?" i snapped and said im leaving her *** to forage while me and my baby are comfortable. Ahahahhaha she just walked away. Come on!

Have you ever read about sponge divers or the Mediterranean sponge industry in history books and wondered why people got so excited about sponges back then?

Yup. That's why.

Sponge cleaner wasn't a popular job but servants didn't get to pick and choose.

Baking soda, lots and lots of baking soda. It's good to have anyway.

I think the Diva Cup or similar product would be my choice over a sea sponge. Boil to clean and done.

Tampons are also great for bullet wounds. They plug the wound and expand to stop bleeding.

As a single guy, it felt a bit odd buying the extra large, extra absorbent napkins. Vac seal is an excellent idea!

As a last resort, yes.
But keep in mind that most (if not all) feminine products are NOT sterile.

Neither are bullet wounds; infection is a problem for tomorrow, bleeding out is a problem for now (but it's a good idea to pick on something at least clean - grass and moss and mud have been used to pack wounds, but I think one would have to be pretty desperate to go that route).

Iserson's Improvised Medicine, p 333 in my paperback edition, says "Studies have shown that the rate of infection of simple, uncomplicated lacerations is no different when using sterile gloves versus when using clean, non-sterile gloves."

Discussion on this has occurred here before; pads and tampons are really very good for absorbing fluid (same effect from incontinence pads) but the need is to stop the bleeding, not absorb the mess. A pressure bandage plus a dressing to encourage clotting is the path for most open wounds. Thoracic/abdominal penetrating wounds, well, 'ugh'. Internal bleeding needs a surgeon.

Now that's an interesting point I didn't know about the rate of infections.

My only point was don't horde pads and tampons instead of proper medical supplies for SHTF medicine.

Great reminder. Best to consider what regular items you, and your family, will need over the course of 30-90 days.

So how do you guys face the embarrassment of buying tampons? "Head Held High" or "Refuse to make eye contact with the cashier/people in line"?

Easy, I don't feel embarrassed - I just put my purchases on the conveyor belt and they ring everything up and I pay...

I'm sure there are worse things to buy. Adult diapers, Preparation H, condoms, pregnancy test kits, midget porn, etc. And then there's buying that all at once....

My wife does the Costco bulk buy thing. One item I don't see listed is a product for yeast infection. My Mother got terrible bladder infections, that took heavy drugs to knock out. Having dealt with old parents, septic shock will punch your card big time.

Whenever I go to WalMart I always make sure to buy ammo and ice cream along with my tampons. Then I pick the youngest male cashier that I can find.

This doesn't work so well for men to do, but as a woman, it's really fun.

C'mon..if you love your SO..it shouldn't be a big deal at all. You're an adult so just walk up and pay for them. You owe her that much.

That's not nearly as bad as when my son was born in December and was circumcised. Doctor said to keep his unit gobbed up in KY so it wouldn't stick to his diaper. Try walking into Rite Aid just to by that?! And then seeing that it was a better deal/ 2-for-1 to buy the house brand (Rite Aid) gel vs. KY!!
Walking up to the register with 2 tubes of lube in my hand..but I paid at the pharmacy counter instead..I asked the pharmacist if both brands were the same and the purpose for the purchase. Luckily I see him often for other Rx meds and when taking the other kids for ice cream after a haircut in the same shopping center.

That being said..I keep stuff for the wife in every vehicles GHB's..our emergency home kit..her shelter in place bag at work..and extra in the trailer when we go camping. They are all kept in ziploc bags to keep them dry. Remember guys..if Momma ain't happy..ain't nobody gonna be happy!! My .02

Tampons can also be used;

To catch a spark for a fire
To plug a nose bleed
Clean the barrel of your firearm
As a water filter

You forgot the ground glass - good for that satisfying 'crunch'.

On a slightly more serious note, pregnancy while the world is going off in a fast-moving handbasket is unlikely to be optimal.

It used to be the case that humans handled delivery pretty routinely - possibly apocryphal family story says my mother's mother delivered her first child, my oldest aunt, in a field, and brought her back to the house in a bucket [apparently those Eastern European farmers/peasants were pretty tough] - though with pretty high child mortality up to about age five.

EASY!!!! Grab like 4-5 different brands/types/sizes...

Throw them all up on the conveyer with a case of beer....

When the cashier looks at you weird... just say " I dunno what the heck that CRAZY B*&$# wants......"

If you're saving them as preps, maybe 4-5 should be enough... If you SO *sent* you to the store as some sort of a dimented 'test'... then toss her 1 pack, hide the rest. Nextime she wants to make you jump through hoops to buy more, you have a secret stash to pull from.
