I just got back from the IDPA clinic held by ISI today.
The drive from East County San Diego was about 3 hours each way. The training and help was definitely worth the 3 hour drive. The people at ISI are professional, very friendly, and I had a really fun time learning and going through the different stages. I definitely plan on going back again so if anyone in San Diego is interested, maybe we can carpool. |

So what's the difference in going to one of these clinics, as opposed to going to an IDPA meet?
I'm planning on going to the IDPA in Pala, this Saturday, 9/14. Anyone else going? This would be my first time, what should I expect & be prepared for? It looks like going to the clinic 1st is the right way to go, true? Thanks... Michael J.

Michael, I was kind of hoping one of the clinic guys would respond to this one, so you could have a different perspective. Our clinics are two in one, I'll explain. Jeff Bova takes the experienced "stagnant range shooter" and adapts their skill to drawing from the holster, engaging the targets while in motion, "slicing the pie" or properly utilizing cover to engage multiple threats in tactical order verses tactical sequence. He teaches how to properly negotiate barackades and maintain cover to not expose yourself to undo threat. He covers tactical verses slide lock reloading as well as the rest of the procedural rules of IDPA. That gives you an idea of the one, now lets talk about the two. Each one of the three stages is run multiple times to "work out the bugs". This is where my talent comes into play. When you run a stage I'm there to give you the best way to engage it, how to move to save time and how to veiw a course of fire more like like a chess board. You have movement and shooting positions, maximizing both takes your game to the next level in speed while maintaining your accuracy. I try to always start everyone on shooting drills that force you to find the balance between speed and accuracy. I hope this gives you an idea of what the clinics are like, now lets talk about a "match environment". You will usually have anywhere between 5 and 12 stages of fire. The Range Safety Officer will give you a "walk through" and then when it's your turn, you'll be on the line, given the commands of "load and make ready", "shooter ready" and the buzzer. It is now your responsibility to solve the stage with out making procedural errors, shooting non threat targets or braking any of the safety rules. You then get to go to the next stage and do it all over again. It's what I love, IDPA is my passion. I hope this answers your questions.

As a 2 time attendee of Nathan's class I would like to reinforce a couple of points. First, while I have not taken the "beginners" class I have seen it being taught and I wish I had something like that available to me when I started out. I shot IDPA for about 8 months and was doing OK but was still making the same errors in running the courses, basically getting "lost" forgetting what targets to engage or where to do my reloads. Nathan helped me to sort out the mental side of the game and my scores improved pretty rapidly after that.
My suggestion would be to take the first step class ASAP and then shoot a few matches to get the fundamentals of IDPA down a bit. Then go back for the 2nd step and really learn how to properly apply those fundamentals and gain insight to the mental side of the game. FYI, I plan to attend again. I learn something new and it's just plain fun! ![]() Scott |

For the beginner clinic Jeff takes you from the very basics (rules and safety on the range, all the range commands, loading/unloading on the firing line, drawing from a holster, proper gun grip for recoil control, tactical reloading, target engagement order, using cover, shooting on the move. Even if you've never shot a competition before, after Jeff's done with you, you'll be totally comfortable entering your first match. Depending on how comfortable you feel, you could also 'graduate' early from Jeff's clinic to Nathan's training so that you get to do a bit more experienced training the same day as well. If you are new to competition shooting and/or IDPA you could start off with Jeff's training, and if it seems too basic for you, you can ask to be bumped up to Nathan's training. Some of the tips and techniques Nathan (and Kim) taught me were ammo management (which makes a huge difference when shooting a 7 round 1911 vs a 10 round cz), proper usage of cover (how to be the right distance from the barricade so that you don't crowd it, which makes it easier to slice the pie and also safer to reload), when to take extra shots at paper and when not to (I was actually losing a lot of time taking extra shots trying to shoot zero's when I'd already have -1's on distant targets). The Clinics are different than a real match since in a real match you can only run a stage once. For me being able to repeat a stage several times is extremely valuable, as it allows you to hone your IDPA skills quickly by letting you repeat a known course of fire several times. In a match you develop the experience to take on different scenarios from scratch, but you don't necessarily get the chance to train your muscle memory through repetition. Also When shooting a stage in a match you might realize certain areas that you need work in (for me that would be weak hand shooting, shooting targets at 15 yards, how to get 2 shots on those swingers that only pop up once), but you don't get to practice that during a match. At the clinic you'll get the chance to repeat a stage 3 times so you do get the opportunity to work on whatever it is you feel you need to work on. I've already been twice, and will certainly be doing them again. No question that the clinics are Well worth it (where else can you get 4-5 hours of training for $80?), but aside from that they are really a LOT of fun! |

Nathan, Kim and Jeff, I can't pry my buddy away from the SSA Steel Madness shoot at Raahuages this coming Sunday - looks like we'll be shootng there. Are you planning to hold additional IDPA clinics in October (mid and month-end).
If so, I'm down for the mid month clinic in Oct (and I think my buddy will be as well). Let me know - Thanks! Last edited by kdruff2; 09-10-2013 at 5:36 PM.. |

Feb through May, we averaged 15 shooters per clinic. During the summer months, with people on vacation or just not wanting to be in the heat, our numbers averaged 8 per clinic. We are looking forward to 15 shooters this upcoming Sunday.
