Default Mosin-Nagant 91/30

Hey guys, here's my MN 91/30. I got it about 6 months ago and finally got around to finishing the stock.

Bravo! I love the light stock. Those are the best deals in C&R!

Nice rifle. How's about some details on the refinishing?

Yeah, I just put the final piece on tonight (handguard), so i wasn't able to get any pictures in the sunlight or even check it out myself in the sunlight.

Because the shellac (I believe that is the finish on one) was coming off when I got it and handled it, I decided to re-finish the stock. First I used Citrustrip to take off the top layers, then I sanded it down using various grades of sandpaper to get the finish I wanted. As you can see, I didn't sand too much because some of the stampings are still on the stock. Once I finished sanding, I used Minwax Sedona Red stain, if I remember correctly, I think I put two coats on. I probably let it sit a few days each time (or more because I'm lazy!). For the final finish, I used Minwax Clear Satin Fast-Drying Polyurethane. I did a little wet sanding between coats of this, but only did two coats.

Sweet. I love that rustic look. I might try your method on one of shooter grade M44's

Gorgeous MN you got there. I just picked up my first 91/30 a few weeks ago and while it's sitting in a monte carlo stock, i wanted to refinish the near perfect wood stock and get that damned shelak and embedded cosmoline off too. So minwax is the way to go...hmmm. Thanks for the gorgeous pic and method! I'll have to post a pic when I'm done. I'd post one of it in the ATI stock with the scout scope and mount, but I don't want to get crucified for modernizing it (even though it's all still in original condition, matching metal, etc).

Black one. Some pics of it. But keep it on the downlow. I don't need anyone from the Mosin forums sending Stalin henchmen to my door to take me away for forced labor in a goulag!

Default nagant 91/30

I tried the citrus strip you used for this project. It worked a little slower than the traditional toxic strippers but the up-side was that if you got it on your skin it didnt burn the crap out of it. This stuff also seems to last forever, I only used a few ounces to strip my stock of multiple coats and it does'nt stink. Thanks for the tip!
