I agree people should be including tax and shipping in their posts, but assembly manhours, ammo and range time are not part of the price comparison, since the same costs would apply to a factory-built new rifle purchase.
I know folks that have put their builds on hold over price gouging -- that means they are still spending time looking for the parts at the right prices, either it's fuel/foot work/keyboard time.

My NIB Colt took .5hr unpackaging/inspecting/cleaning before she was delivering lead.

Working under the guise of 922r, there is a myriad of manufacturers with little QA under the standard boilerplate of don't screw up.

Just look at the posts on CG of why this or that doesn't work; builders or parts? How many of those builders know how to replace a cars alternator w/o going online?

People hanging out here are going to do the research online anyway.

922r has nothing to do with US made rifles.

I built a 20" Stainless for $1300 total. Upper from PKFirearms.com. Changed my mind on the style and now trying to sell it. so I can build a 16" version. with a flutted barrel.

just completed my franklin arms billet lower, which i got for 250 out the door, i put a 200 cmc trigger in it, spent 80 on the magpul acs-l stock, 100 on RRA lpk, buffer, tube, spring and houge grip....all these prices were found by hunting on calguns and my local gun shops, all new parts.. def spent more than i planned, but got exactly what i wanted and didnt pay panic prices for anything.. now finding a bolt carrier group has been a different story...

I started my build after the first of this year. So far I am in about $1250 to get an up and running rifle and I feel it has decent components:

Mega forged lower
PSA lpk
MOE grip, trigger guard, stock
NiB bcg
PSA premium upper, FN CHF barrel, SS12G12 free float rail
BCM gunfighter mod4 charging handle

Looking to spend another $125 on fixed sights

Have spent $36 on shipping
About $50 for DROS and tax on lower

Only problem is I haven't received my BCG or upper yet....should be done the first week of April though!

Ended up spending $994.81 total after tax, shipping, dros, etc. for a good tack driver, but I got some parts at a good price from friends.

AR-1 Patriot Lower
Stag Arms LPK
Magpul 6-position stock
Prince50 Bullet Button (ugh, but I don't like featureless)
CMMG Upper, A4 flat top, 16" barrel, internally chrome lined BCG, quad rail shroud
Grip Pod front grip
4x32 CQB Scope from valhalla armory.

Bought 3 lowers pre sandyhook at 85.00 a piece. In late December I nabbed 2 White Oak Armory complete uppers at 1200.

3 lower parts kits for 65.00 a pop back in January.

Recently picked up a custom high end 14.5 upper for 1400.

Haven't spent any money on ammo as prices are still insane.

I am finishing up an AR build with the cost tipping a little over the $1200 mark (minus sights/optics, mags)..

($120 - CGN) - AR Stoner Upper Receiver DC/FA
($125 - CGN) - Colt Stripped BCG
($150 - Turner's Outdoorsman) - Mega Forged Stripped Lower
($190 - AR15-Depot) - ARDepot 16" M4 SOCOM Mid Barrel
($100 - JoebobOutfitters) - Magpul ACS Stock
($35 - JoebobOutfitters) - Magpul MIAD Grip
($35 - JoebobOutfitters) - Magpul MOE Handguard
($20 - JoebobOutfitters) - Magpul RVG Foregrip
($30 - JoebobOutfitters) - KNS Anti Rotation Pins Gen2 Mod1
($30 - Weapon Outfitters) - DSG Mil Spec Buffer Tube
($30 - Weapon Outfitters) - Vltor Buffer Assy
($75 - Core15-Rifles) - Core15 LPK W/Slotted OTG
($30 - RifleGear) - RaddLock Bullet Button
($50 - Ebay) - Barrel Components (Barrel Nut/Delta Ring Assy, Gas Tube+Roll Pin, End Cap, Crush Washers)
($25 - Ebay) - FSI Competition Compensator
($25 - Ebay) - Vector Rail Gas Block
($40 - Gunbroker, Ebay) - Bolt Components (Extractor Assy, Ejector Assy, Bolt)
($15 - Botach) - Ambi Sling End Plate
($43 - Botach)- BCM/VLTOR Mod3 Charging Handle

Dros + Tax: $54 (Lower Receiver)
Shipping: $42 (Most shipping was free; Joebobs, Botach)

Total - $1,265

Although this isn't the most high-end AR that I've ever built, I think that I did pretty fair with this ending up as a more than "decent" build with given the current market situation(s)
And despite being able to still find complete AR's for under $1000, I nevertheless continue to prefer building my own

I felt kinda bad building my featureless AUG for around $1500. Today's prices make it look like a bargain.

I built a 6.8 SPC about 4 months ago...

Got a complete YMH upper for $700, got a Spikes Lower from Golden State Tactical - RRA LPK, threw on a stock, MagPul pistol grip.

Little over $1100 for everything. (except optics)

I recently traded a guitar for a complete Smith+Wesson M&P lower (a2 pistol grip, m4 collapsible stock). The seller was selling it for $450 firm.

I just bought a BCM midlength upper(minus handguards, friend gave me a pair costs around $20) earlier this week for $470 with charging handle and a CMT/Stag BCG for $210.

I had a detachable carry handle i traded for a matech buis.

For a bare bones quality rifle, your looking at $1200 without sights and upgrades.

Don't be bummed about what you pay. As long as your happy that's what counts. There will always be a better deal somewhere down the line. Today you payed more than you wanted on a rifle but tomorrow you may pay less on something like a vehicle or a scope. In the end it evens out.

I'm into my lower for 519.00, all post 12/14/2013.
285 S&W lower CGN (dros is included)
134 UTG stock and buffer group + ambi end plate + spares
100 LPK (either CMMG or RRA)

Not terrible pricing considering the climate.

Probably looking at another 750-1000 to complete the upper with iron sights.

$110 for a spikes lower ( I bought them for $99 each and got 9 of them I think, so I'm only adding $11 for tax and dros).-pre sandyhook
$60 for a parts kit.-pre sandyhook
$150 for a Vltor stock.-pre sandyhook
$540 shipped for a PSA 20" hammer forged FN barreled upper.-post sandyhook
$150 for a FA BCG.-post sandyhook
$49 for a KAC micro rear sight.-post sandyhook

Under $1100. I bought the lowers quite a few years ago. I originally was going to buy 4 at riflegear. The dude helping me asked if I'd like to leave the dros open in case I wanted to add some when I came to pick them up. I bought 5 more 10 days later.

My cheapest build was probably my .22lr which came out to about $800 with optics and all that.

Even pre-panic my rifles were each $1500 and up. Except for this frankenbuild which came out to $1200, including the Eotech.

Working on a few builds still but I'd rather wait it out a little for prices to fall back down.

Forged Lower = $65. Traded 400 9mm I reloaded for it. $65 to mill out at the local armorer
CMMG LPK=$123
Buffer and stock = $100
BCM upper 16" 1:7 = $575 (after shipping) auction on gunbroker
BCG = $170 auction on gunbroker
Bullet button = $25 at Ares Armor
MBUS and MOE handguard = $100 at Ares Armor.
12 USGI Mags = Free. Tactically acquired from Military Service

Grand total of: ~$1158.

Not bad considering not having to go through an FFL, IMO anyway.

About $1300 here. Would have been just under $1100 but I put in the Geiselle SSA-E trigger. Great upgrade.
