This was really huge in the firearms community when this happened years ago.

What Mr. ATF was basically claiming is you could use the lower with a real upper and have full auto. With a few modifications of course

It certainly wasn't just a swap out and there were some engineering problems to solve. The few who did look into it (at least the ones I read) pretty much came to the conclusion anyone with the know-how would figure it would be easier/better to get an 80% lower and drill the extra hole for the different fire control group. Thus having an aluminium lower instead of a plastic one of dubious quality.

5 years ago? My second post and I'm already looking like a fool! Guess I need to step up my research game!

remember the ATF decides what constitutes an 80% paperweight and what is a nearly complete firearm... they say this takes little work to be used as a firearm.... and a shoe string can be an NFA fullauto device and a soda bottle can be a silencer...

While old, I believe the first WA gas blowback m4 were infact able to accept a real LPK and upper since the company did their best to make them milspec. The design was changed due to this. How many rounds you could have gotten off before it cracked in your hands, well thats a different matter.
