Default Collecting tanks

From the WSJ:
PORT LAVACA, Texas—Weapons buffs may stock semiautomatics in the gun safe. But nothing makes a statement like having an Army tank in the garage.

Scattered around the country are members of a small fraternity of guys who own tanks. They are hyper-avid history buffs or hyper-edgy investors or just wealthy men who can now afford hyper-sized versions of the toys they played with when they were boys. Tank brokers—yes, there is such a thing—estimate there are several hundred to 1,000 private tank owners in the U.S.

"There's always a little boy in the man," says Barbara Bauer, whose husband, Bill Bauer, owns a pristine, 20-ton, World War II Chaffee tank in Port Lavaca.
From the article, you can get a pretty good deal on a British Chieftain.

The slideshow's got some good pics too:

I'd be curious to know how many of them are functional enough to drive...

How cool would it be to pull into an ARCO station for a fill-up?
Can you blast anything with it?
A few years ago I saw a video were a guy stole one and led the police on a slow chase as he crunched cars. Hey OJ; ya listening?

I remember Arnold had one.

I seem to remember him banning 50BMG rifles too.

Oh well, now I need a tank.

i have been to the littlefield collection and i must say that it was an amazing experience and i had a great time.. only wish i brought a camera that day!

i have seen tanks on ebay in the past. none were functional that i can recall but it would still make an awesome lawn ornament! face it, lawn gnomes arent scaring anyone away.. at least not like a tank!

like this website.. tanks for errybody!!

Piers Morgan wanted to know if the 2nd amendment allowed you to have a tank. I guess that question is answered!

For some odd, unexplainable reason I'm not threatened enough to not let him do it. Hmmm.

I always wanted a tank. I can settle for a Bren Carrier or Ferret.

Yeah, I was thinking that as I began reading the article.

I would love to have a Bradley or a Russian BMP-2!

Military armor is readily available, there are many throughout CA. Terminus, CA (Hwy 12, west of Lodi) has a big meet of the Military Vehicle Collectors Assoc. every year, lots of fun. There are probably a dozen sites that offer vehicles for sale. I used to have them all bookmarked but lost them when my old computer crashed. Here's a couple I remember...

Littlefield's collection is one of the best in the world. I've been twice, going again this year. If you ever have the chance to do the tour, do it!

I got to visit a collection in Texas outside of Dallas several years ago. The collection was litterally in a barn and had an M5A1 with the main gun live, M114, 40mm Bofers, M3 halftrack, French 25mm AT gun, German 88mm AA/AT gun, and a bunch more. The owner was recently deceased and the collection was being auctioned off by the widow. I worked with the brother in law of the collector so I got to climb all over everything. What a blast!

Funny, I was just browsing through Ebay Motors looking for a tank.

There's a guy with a M18 Hellcat for sale. Also a guy with a Sherman M4A4, no gun. It's only a few plates and rivets away from being reconfigured into a Firefly.

If only I had the money.

Fella north of Woodland has been dealing in armor and military vehicles for awhile. A couple years ago he had somethng like 10 halftracks in the yard in various conditions. Currently there are 2 M60's parked there, one looks operational the other not so.

There's a nice-looking armored vehicle at the auction site in the IE. 60 fwy at Van Buren, just East of I-15. Been there a long time.

I might flip a couple cases of 5.56 and go buy a tank myself.
