Default AAR: LMS Defense, Urban Defense 23 Feb 2013

On 23 February 2013 LMS Defense held a one day Urban Defense course at Sacramento Valley Shooting Center near Sacramento, CA. There were 8 students most of whom were taking the class to hone their skills as they pertain to concealed carry and close quarter firearms use.

WEATHER:
Better range weather could not have been ordered up for the day. The light breeze was just enough to force students to keep their cover garments and an occasional extra layer on all day which was perfect given the course material.

GUNS/GEAR:
With the focus of this class being concealed carry there was a wide variety of support equipment and holsters in the class. Holsters came from popular manufacturers such as JM Custom Kydex, US Sentinel Gear, W2H Kydex and a host of other manufacturers. Most of the guns were Glocks with a couple of Sigs mixed in.

OVERVIEW:
The goal of this class is to give concealed carry permit holders, plain clothes or off duty police officers and others with a need to carry a handgun on the concealed skills to help them do so more effectively. We began the class with a discussion of concealed carry methods, ways to clear cover garments and present the firearm from the holster quickly and effectively. Multiple target engagement, positional shooting, turns and cover and concealment were talked. We then presented some alternate sighting methods for rapid target engagement. One handed shooting and shooting while protecting a loved one was introduced and practiced. After the students had shown understanding of these skills they shot one handed with a simulated injury and then practiced support side presentations from concealment as well as support hand only shooting.

All of the students came ready to learn. A deep rooted desire to improve their skills and abilities to protect themselves and loved ones made the class fun. This was a great class and they were a pleasure to train with. Thank you all for your hard work.

Sacramento Valley Shooting Center continues to be one of the best places to train in the north state and the staff has worked tirelessly to make improvements to the range.

I would also like to thank the following companies for their support of LMS Defense and our students.

I took this class from LMS late last year to hone my skills. Being an instructor myself, I need to get in as much practice as possible and improve my skill set.

Josh is a great instructor. He makes the class interesting and you always learn something new.

Thanks to Josh and the LMS crew for for doing what you do!

I was one of the students on Saturday. Urban Defense was another outstanding class put on by Josh and LMS Defense. The lessons and drills were all relevant to me as someone who carries a concealed handgun. In addition to Josh's lessons and drills on marksmanship and weapons handling, I especially benefit from the mindset aspects of the class and the focus on shooting Non-Standard Responses (to get out of the habit of putting only 2 shots on a threat), stepping off the line when drawing, reloading and fixing malfunctions, and treating each drill like you are really dealing with a possible/actual threat to you and your loved ones. I also appreciated the opportunity to run through drills simulating being out in public with a spouse or child and dealing with them and the threat(s) at the same time. With every class I take, the more the point is being driven home that there are so many elements I need to work on as I try to train, practice, and prepare to defend myself and my loved ones. Sure, square range peformance is definitely important, but so is being physically fit, the importance of communication and pre-planning with spouse and child, shooting competitions (something I used to do every weekend and need to get back into), knife and combatives training, and 360 degree training in shoot houses pitted against role players. Josh and Jason, thanks again for the great training over the weekend.
