Default Coverting a Windham Weapons 5.56mm to a 6.8mm

I finally got my Windham Weapons AR-15 last week and want to convert it to a 6,8mm Rem. I'm new to the AR-15 platform and i'm afraid i'm a bit of a noob at building and all that stuff. I found a site that seems to have what need. At least i think. Do i just need a 6,8mm bolt or the whole bolt assembly? I see a barrel but what about the gas tubs? Do i just use what is already on my 16in Windham carbine? any help advice is much appreciated.

You can use your existing bolt carrier but you will need a 6.8 bolt, barrel, muzzle device and magazines.

ETA: You will probably want a new gas block/front sight base too.

Yes, but - you will need a new handguard since those barrels have long gas systems and you currently have a short carbine gas system.

Also, those barrels will have the original 6.8 chamber and if you try to shoot hot reloads or SSA "tactical" loads you may end up with ejector swipes on your brass.

The Spec-II chamber is looser and will shoot hotter loads without signs of over pressure.

You should probably just get a whole new upper so you can switch out between calibers on the fly.

Yes true but trying to make this a cheap conversion. I'll eventually i'm sure end up with two rifles looking a doing a 80% lower and will probably use that as a base to complete another 5.56mm build. Then i'll have a 5.56 and a 6.8mm.

Why not go 300 aac blackout? Swap barrels. Don't need a new magazine or bolt.

I never built an upper but my understanding with the conversion is that you swap barrels and its easier if the gas system matches up. Best bet is to have a gunsmith do it or build a complete from scratch just in case you dont like It or want sell it or cant find ammo or dont want to buy all the specialized upper tools. You can keep resuse same bcg and forward assist. A new partial upper will be stripped upper, ejection port cover, forward assist, gas block, gas tube, rails or handguard and barrel with whatever attachment on end. Ive researched that this can be done for around 500.

Sounds "easy". Im starting from scratch with my project. Youtube has some informational videos. Ideally, I would model after the late John Noveske's. Its a shorter barrel that can be surpressed that handles subsonics. Wont work in CA.

If you like building stuff for larger calibers people go AR10.

Default Changing directions for now

I decided to keep my Windham Weapons as a 5.56mm and am going to build another one from scratch with my son. Now need to decide if we want to build a 6.8mm or a 6.5mm Grendel. Its going to be my sons deer rifle and haven't found info on which caliber makes a better deer rifle. I'm leaning to the 6.5mm because i'm reading it has better range. I have a 80% lower on order from Superior Metal Fabricators in Riverside that is due in mid April.

Honestly, you will get a lot of arguing one way or the other (6.5 vs 6.8), but unless you reload, I suggest you research and go with the caliber that has comercial ammo most readily available!

I ordered a 20in 6.5mm barrel i think it looks to be the superior caliber of the two. This is going to be a fun project.
