Default 870 Buyers Remorse...

I have the 870 in jail along with a Marlin 795 that I picked up earlier today. I went in to get a Mossberg 590, but they had none. No surprise, I haven't found one locally in stock, when I did they were asking way too much.

Well, I had already planned on falling back on a 870 Tactical if I failed to find a 590 under $500 again, the 870's seemed to be everywhere. So I did the paperwork and paid for it, along with the Marlin on an impulse buy.

I almost walked right out after paying, but decided to walk over and look at cheap scopes for my newly acquired Marlin. It was then that I see, 4 guns deep on the rack, behind 3 cheapo shotguns, what looks to be a 590. Mostly bare, with just an ugly heatshield on it. I asked to see it, and sure enough, it was a 590.

No tag on it, so I don't know exactly which model, and I could tell he felt really bad when I realized what it was. To be honest, he was pretty inept at the entire process, obviously completely new to the whole thing, and it was the longest experience I ever had buying a gun. When I asked if they had any 590's he looked nervous, and started checking tags. I noticed he even checked a couple rifles. I also had to ask the guy to see the gun I was buying, every other place I have been has done that without question. I was tired of being there to the point of feeling annoyed and like I was just trying to remain polite. He was a nice guy, and I really didn't want to be a dick, but I was rather irritated, and I felt like I just needed to leave. True or not, that is still all an excuse. I had my chance to do something about it when I noticed the 590 and had him hand it to me. I could tell he would have made it right, he felt badly for it, but chose my comfort and the quick and "easy" route instead.

But then, all I can think about on that way home is that 590... Grrr... I hate myself.

Are they able to amend my purchase so I can avoid paying another $25 for a second background check on the same transaction? Or is every BC tied to each specific weapon/transaction?

If I can get away without paying the background check twice, I'd like to try it out. Anyone had any experience with this kind of thing? If I can, do I do it ASAP, or can I wait until the pick up date?

If it's a huge hassle, I'll just live with the 870 (for now) I guess, but the whole thing has me rather annoyed. It is MY fault, for being lazy, and not just taking care of it right then I suppose...

I'm not sure about the whole process. But I would just go back to the store where you bought the 870 from and tell them that you want the 590 instead.
BTW I don't think the serial number is placed on the DROS for long guns.

If you bought it from him, before your 10 days is up, he can actually switch the guns for you or add a gun for you if you wanted to purchase.. as long as it is a long gun... but if you take posession of the shotgun and walk out pass his door.. then you start over and pay another Dros..

I get asked the question if I want to add another rifle or long gun when I leave a gun store where I bought the gun from all the time.. as long as it's a long gun you are fine..

BTW, from personal experience.. the 870 is a much better shotgun in design... sure you will get some 590 owners disagreeing..
Both are working guns and they go bang everytime... I had the 590 and though the extra rounds and the bayonet lug was pretty cool, I felt it was too long for a shotgun and a shorter 870 would more easier if you need to sweep your house of burglers.. either way , the Rack sound of both will make the Burglers vacate the area LOL

I purchased an 870 a few weeks ago, within the 10 days for the background check, about 6 days later I also picked up a S&W M&P 15-22. I was going to go through with another background check when the guy behind the counter told me if I'm in process of a BC I can just add that gun to my order. So if you already have a BC in process you can get more guns, I believe up to 5 (that's how many lines are on the form). They just have to be rifles/shotguns. Handguns are a different story. I was excited to only have to wait 4 days for the additional gun to be available and I ended up going home with 2 guns on the same BC. Just make sure it's from the same store. Have fun with it!

Just roll the $$$ over to the 590, should not be too difficult because it is a long gun.

There are some stores that wont let you add to the original DROS even if you are within the 10 days (like Turners) but you can still replace one long gun for another.

+1 on the adding long guns to the dros. When i got my last stripped lower from rifle gear, the salesman told me i can add up to 4 more lowers if i decide i want more before i picked it up! Wish i knew that the market was gonna take a turn for the worse and i would have.

Excellent! Glad to hear it, never ran into that sort of situation before. I mainly just wanted the 590 for the extra rounds and the 2" of barrel. I only plan on buying one shotgun, so I definitely want a home defender first and foremost. But honestly thinking about it, it will get more time at the range shooting clays with a friend whenever I can't bring my father in laws breach barrel CZ, which is mainly why I wanted the longer gun. I'm going down there tomorrow to switch them out.

The 870 is an awesome shotgun but if your dead set on a 590 go in there and tell them im sure they will do the swap.I was actually in the same boat when I bought my mossberg 500 I really wanted an 870p but couldnt find one.I kept the 500 im really happy with it.

that os an interesting statement.. in Auto's I can understand but since we are talking about pump... all you do is pump another round in the chamber.. is it the action not smooth or is felt recoil different?

Cheap shells in the 870 expresses will get stuck hard after firing and wont eject. I've seen this personally.

I've heard the way to fix this was polishing the chamber. I still have to test but it feels smooth.

I own two 870 pumps, a Police Magnum and the Express Magnum, both are flawless. I also have the Win 1300 Defender, another great pumper. I've shot the Moss 500, and well, the rest is history with my choices as you can see. They are all good shotguns, cant' go wrong with any of them. YMMV.

from what i understand, the brass part of cheap winchester trap loads expand when fired and get stuck in the remington. i dont know why this doesnt affect the mossbergs but i only get the expanding brass problem in my 870... after extensive research ive determined that other people have the same problem. this kinda makes me nervous because i would hate to be in a SHTF stuation and have a shell expand inside it. i dont have the time to test a bunch of shotgun shells and with the panic, its hard to find different types of shotgun shells. so yeah, my remington is not my go-to shotgun. might sell it or trade it...

My condolensces. Now you have to be stuck with an 870 like the over 10 million other gun buyers. It sucks being you.

If you hate the 870, you can sell it for at least 80% of what you paid providing you kept it in decent condition.
One thing I don't like about my 870 Police is that the little loading gate flap seems to be heavier than my Express was, and pinches my fingers when loading shells.

Otherwise, this shotgun will be around to witness the end of civilization.

My Wingmasters have no such issue... They eat anything 2 3/4 & 3"

Now its a different issue on the newer expresses as Remington seems more concerned about numbers than making quality guns... Yes, I have experienced the chamber woes... One Express took a Reamer, a polish job didn't do it...

I consider myself a "870 guy" and have three older 870s---wouldn't trade them for any other pump shotgun---all function just fine. Now having said that, just before the "Rodney King" riots of 1992, my brother told me he wanted a 12ga just in case the party got to his house. At the time, I was managing a gunstore, but couldn't lay my hands on a decent 870---new or used---everybody was not selling. I was just about to loan him one of my 870s when into the store walked in a minty 590 with the heat shield barrel---problem solved. He's had the 590 all these years later---both he and I have shot it (and my 870s) numerous times---both are good...

*shrug* both good guns. I prefer the 870, but I sure wouldn't be disappointed by a 590.

For the record, all I've ever shot through my 870 was cheap garbage and I've never had a ftf or fte.

I have a Mossberg 590. Parkerized. Got it for $430 back in 2009.

Big 5 has blued ones for about 300-ish if I remember correctly, but its been a few years since I saw those ads.

whats the difference between the 590 and 500. i'd like one of the two in the next year. i thought they differed in take down and assembly, but after watching videos on the take downs of both, i didn't notice any significant differences.

The 870 does have the issue where the expanding shell will expand and catch on the microgrooves in the chamber. Happened to me after a few continuous loads but Remington will make it right and send you a new barrel if it happens to you. I don't like to send things in and wait so I just polished the barrel with a drill, 12GA brush, and some 00 steel wool. Took 5 minutes and the thing will shoot anything. Add the Wilson combat spring and follower and it's the smoothest pump shotgun I've shot compared to the Moss 500 and the Winchester Defender.

I would call and ask to talk to the owner / manager and explain what happened and that you were misinformed that a particular shotgun wasn't in stock yet after you bought your second choice saw they had one . I mean your flipping the bill you should get what you want ! As far as the Mossberg vs. Remy debate it rages on lol I own both guns but favor my Mossberg

older 870s are great shotguns, but to call them better than mossbergs is patently foolish. newer remington anything has horrible QC and i wouldn't take it in trade for the biggest POS gun i have. after trying out 870s, i bought a mossberg 500 persuador, and after owning that a while, i tried a winchester defender and promptly sold my mossberg. the mossberg is a good shotgun, smooth and reliable, but was too long and not as smooth and fast as the defender. 7+1 in the 18.5" barrel is something that mossberg for some reason does not do. if they did, they'd have the market cornered i feel. that said, i've run everything through the defender with never a hiccup. wouldn't stake my life on any remington product made in the last 5-10 yrs.
