Default FFL03 and PPT

I've heard this both ways so am seeking opinions from seasoned collectors:

If an FFL03 obtains a C&R handgun in CA (via PPT) and wishes to log it in his/her collectors book, should they show it as coming from the dealer that transferred it directly, or from the original private party owner?

Any wisdom (or references to official documents) on this would be appreciated.

I was told that if the FFL did not retain the firearm overnight, the FFL would not have to log it into their bound book (strange, but that is what I was told), and since a person with a C&R FFL and CA DOJ COE would be exempt from the waiting period and the FFL would just being doing the DROS (no 4473 required), that it could be logged from the seller.

Personally, I think I would log it from both, just to be paranoid.

The C&R FFL holder would need to log the C&R firearm.

I am asking someone else, so if I hear something I will let you know.

If it were me, I'd pick up the phone and call the dealer and ask them if they logged it in and out of their book.

Their disposition is going to show shipping it to you, and your book should show receiving it from them.

Thanks to both for your thoughts. The Federal guidelines on FFL03 seem fairly straightforward (as Govt. documents go) but when you layer the state of CA on top, there are some ambiguities.

I checked with a person I know at the BATF and was told that you should log it as coming from the FFL, but to also retain the documentation as to who you got it from.
