Default Just how popular is .40?

I know LE loves .40
I carry one most of the time on duty.

How popular is .40 OUTSIDE of LE?

If the current ammo shortage is any indication, much less popular than 9mm. Lots of .40 on the shelf.

Interesting. I also noticed that there are more guns in .40 available. right now.

It seems to me like .40 is mostly a cop caliber.

I have one as my HD weapon. I like it. Am planning on getting a 10mm just to have a well rounded set of calibers and also it will be a glock for a hunting sidearm.

Not very popular. It's the only ammo left @ Wally World.

I think people are not used to the "recoil" and prefer the 9mm due to weaker recoil and cheaper to run. I admit I only have one 40 (G22C), but I do enjoy shooting it. The fact that 40 is easier to find, as stated you can find ammo at Walmart, I'm thinking of getting an XD 40 for that reason.

I love the .40 caliber round. I carry a M&P40c with 180 grain hollowpoints daily. But the 9mm and .45 will always be more popular because they have been around over a 100 years. The .40 has only been around like 23 years.

Maybe you can find more 40 on the shelves because they are making more of it.

Skill is right. I have yet to be consistent with the .40 at the range...some days I shoot well ..some days I shoot terrible.. I once had a range instructor tell me "there is nothing wrong with this gun!" He fires and hits the target in the white...I just held my laughter ...9mm and 45 is where it is at

Yeah, no one should buy .40s You won't be able to shoot them because they spin backwards I hear.

Besides I only have a few hundred left and need to stock up.

I agree about 9mm and 45 being more popular. I had a bunch of ammo for sale. I still have 40, the other two went quick, along with 22. 357 not as popular either but I already knew that.

Most people can fire 9mm faster and more accurately than 40.

Not that popular. Stick with what most civilians shoot: 9mm, .38spl/.357mag and .45ACP.

Sure, but it's a matter of practice. I have some friends who shoot USPSA with .40s and they are very fast and very accurate.

Think about this, if 9mm didn't exist, then .40 S&W would be the new 9mm. (maybe, I dunno)

.40 is a good round. It's plenty popular but imo nowhere near 9mm and .45 acp. I like the way .45 shoots and the bigger hole.....I like the price of 9mm and the capacity of my 9's. I carry .40 on duty but more often than not a .45 off duty.

If you like .40, go for it....it's not going anywhere, price isn't too steep and it's a solid performer. On top of that, whenever there's an ammo shortage: it's the only pistol round you can reliably find.

I know that due to the cost of ammo I only shoot 9mm at this time. I have even gone as far as starting to trade most of my other handguns for 9mm guns.

.40 DOES take a bit more practice to shoot well when compared with 9mm and .45 acp IMO. It too me a couple thousand rounds of drilling to get as good with my .40 as I am with my other guns. Part of that was adjusting to a different gun but a lot of it was getting used to that extra muzzle flip and recoil.

It's still a fairly new caliber compared to 9 and 45, so the majority of shooters are used to 9 and 45. One of the reasons I chose .40 is because it's not as popular. Easier for me to find. More power than 9, cheaper than 45. I like it.

Respectfully, I get tired of hearing things like that about 9mm, .380 auto, .25 auto, .22lr,ect...

Having personally experienced .45 ACP and .40 cal shootings, I can tell you that they are deadly cartridges if you can hit what you're shooting at.

And having personally showed up first to shootings where the smaller aforementioned calibers were used, and found people crumpled on the sidewalk, the lawn, halfway through a door, or slumped over at the wheel, I'll just say this.... hits count more than the caliber if you're talking about semi-auto pistols.

As to the OP's original question: .40 is popular. But moods swing, and 9mm and .45 are widely proliferated. So folks stock up on that. Go ahead and get yourself that XD man And buy up that .40 fmj for practice. Or ****... even for self defense if that's what the budject allows. All that really matters are hits and tactics. Caliber will always be second to that.

Yes! Yes! 9mm and .45 ACP are the ones to have.... Great calibers!!!! Leave more .40 S&W for me!!!! Aside from the joking, .40 S&W isn't as popular as 9mm and .45 ACP.

One reason I bought a Glock 23 (.40 cal) is that you can get after market barrels. So I can switch between .40 and 9mm and double my options.

I own several .40s, and shoot it all the time in competition. I've never had a pepper popper remain standing after taking a hit from a .40. I have seen it on many occasions with 9mm and even some handloaded .45

Same goes here. The "cheaper than .45" part especially. I have three .40 cal pistols, two full size and a sub-compact. It was a little work learning to shoot them accurately and consistently but worth the effort.

.40 S&W is accurate enough. This is a 6 inch target at 10 yards with cheap ammo. Couple of flyers but not bad.

Interesting .

I carry a GEN4 G22 ON/OFF duty with 15 and 22 round magazines

The only ammo I shoot in it is FED 180HST.

I can keep all my shots in the center (8/9/10) of the B27 full size target at 50 yards standing.

It is a great combination or power and firepower ,but I DO shoot my Glock 17 and 34 a little bit faster.
