Default Out of state handgun purchase

Hey guys. I had a quick question for you all.

Later on today, my buddy and I are flying to Las Vegas for an engineering convention. My buddy is set on buying a handgun and is currently a CA resident. I am originally from CA and have done extensive research on the topic but I just wanted to make sure I havent missed something. Here is what I told him to do:

-This will be a private party purchase so he will meet at a gun shop in Vegas with the ability to transfer to CA. I know technically it would be ok if the seller ships directly to his FFL, but neither of us know the best way to ship, etc so he wants a shop to do it.

It is currently on the roster of approved handguns.

He has notified his California FFL of the transfer. his FFL said to email him the fax number of the Las Vegas shop and he can send a copy of his FFL license.

The seller of the gun will receive cash, the Las Vegas store will ship the gun to the CA FFL once the license is faxed over.

My buddy waits 10 days and can go get his new gun. Am i missing anything?

Thanks guys!

Buddy won't wait the 10 days until he gets back to CA to start the DROS process.

Otherwise looks pretty good.

One more thing though, NV FFL may charge a fee to ship gun. If the CA FFL will take delivery from a non-FFL it might just be easier to have the seller ship gun.

He will need a HSC or exemption.

Yeah thanks! Forgot about the HSC.

How expensive is it to ship a gun privately?

A Vegas shop will do the transfer for 40.

I know it has to be overnight to the Ffl via ups or FedEx but is there anything else? I'd heard the seller only needs to receive a number from the Ffl rather than an actual copy of Ffl license?

Thanks again!

No reason to overnight the gun. FFLs can use regular post.

Even private party doesn't have to be overnight?

As was posted, the Nevada ffl can legally ship the weapon via usps and overnight is not required.

If the NV ffl wants the license, CA guy can fax it to him. If he'll accept ez-check through the batfe, he'll need to get the first 3 and last 5 numbers of the CA ffl's license.

There's a sticky at the top of this page...

Yep thanks! I've read through the stickie as well I just wanted to confirm. What is the point of giving the buyer an ez-check number to lookup? Just for added security that it was a valid transfer? Is this something that is necessary or is more dependent on the seller?

The EZ Check is so the NV FFL knows that the CA FFL is still valid.

Cool. I've heard the terminology before but I didn't know exactly what it was.

Thanks all for the info! I think we got it figured out

Simple version...

Seller needs to provide evidence to his shipper that he's shipping to a licensee.

Seller can do that in 2 ways...

He can get buyer to have his ffl fax or mail a copy of his license to seller...or, if sellers ffl will except it, he can do the ez-check himself and save buyer's ffl the time of faxing or mailing.

Get on the batfme's website and check it out.

Stickies here should not need "confirmation".

Comprende'?

Thanks for your help.I posted a thread because I read through the stickies and did not find every bit of information I needed. I was not confirming the sticky rather confirming what I had heard from potentially unreliable sources.

Thanks all!
