Default 9MM ammo - bulk up on JHP or just wait for FMJ?

I'm sitting here wondering about 9mm ammo. The supply of FMJ ammo at reasonable prices has all but disappeared.

One can spring for JHP, which shoots just as good, but of course, even in bulk, is more expensive.

I've got enough 9mm FMJ to hold me for a couple of months or so, and a couple of boxes defensive rounds.

But then what?

So, buy a case of JHP now, and just plan to shoot it at the range, or just sit and wait for sanity to return and good quality FMJ return to "pre-nuts" pricing?

I was searching last night and all I could find was premium JPH @ $0.75 - $1.10 each and that's way too much for me to think about shooting it at the range.

With the bills in the pipeline here in California, I don't see any end in the near future. Ammo licence, 5 cent a round tax, the shelves will be bare until this crap either passes or dies. And if it all passes, well, just take a ride by Ammo Bros and check out the prices, now imagine if dealers are the only place you can buy, and they have all kinds of reporting and record keeping to do. I bet 2 buck a round .223 and buck a round 9mm will be the norm.

I would wait if I were you. I would also start doing some research on reloading.

Also, if it's a home defense gun I would just pick up a few hundred rounds of JHP and practice enough to know I and my gun can shoot it straight.

Yeah, looked into re-loading. I think it will be at least a couple of years before reloading supplies are back to normal. People weren't reloading a lot of 9mm before so there wasn't much in the way of supplies either.

In spite of showing available, they're really back-ordered.

There was plenty of demand for 9mm bullets, small pistol primers, and pistol powder long before the current hysteria. Production shooters and others have been reloading 9mm for a long time. Instead of complaining, just buy one of those introductory reloading kits with a single stage press and you're halfway to no longer relying on the stores for factory ammo.

I feel your pain. I have been shooting only 7 rounds per range visit through my new LC9 just to keep a feel for it. I have a ton of 9mm brass so may have to start relaoding.

I would advise not using the JHP for range practice. Perhaps one mag per visit simply to confirm they are feeding correctly. All the hysteria will die down shortly and ball ammo will soon be available at decent prices, though probably higher then we paid last November.

Best chance is the private sales sections of firearms forums. It's gonna take some patience and vigilance, but you'll find some reasonably priced, well, relative to current prices.

It's pretty bad on the reloading front. I just went to Midway and literally all components are gone but I did spot 230gr. 45 but can only get 1 bag of 1,000 for about $195.00. I added some SS pins (cleaning media) since it they're still charging $28.18 for shipping and tax so these are going to be expensive rounds to reload but it's literally BETTER than nothing. Still empty on the 9mm front so looks like my revolver will get some ammo reloaded since I have some jacketed .357 and cast .38.

Yeah, it's the normal trickle down. Reloading Supply mfgs' primary customers are the New Ammo Mgfs and all reloading supplies are going to them for new ammo. Consumers are at the bottom of the food chain.

Where are you? Martin B Rettings in Culver City has lots of 9MM 2 boxes per day at around $13 per box.
