Default Places to shoot around Fresno? BLM

Looking for an outdoor place to take the family shooting near Fresno. Been to Tumey and its a bit far and don't really want to pay $20 a head at Auberry range. Any other places you guys could point us to it would be appreciated.

On the east side of the 5 is BLM off of Panoche Road and little pachoche road, Panoche Hills Management Area 36.7218, -120.7918. You can shoot out there all day long, another place to shoot at is the turn out near bass lake 37.34299, -119.59076.

Forgive the potentially stupid question... but... check where?

There are regional subforums for Northern CA and Southern CA under 'Calguns in your community' - but there isn't one for the Central Valley as far as I can see.

^^^ This is where I go. It's well-backstopped, but less than 100 yds. I also shoot at other random places in the Nat Forest.

I used to take my boys shooting a lot on the BLM land at Panoche Canyon, Little Panoche Rd. Also hunted chukkar there. That was before all the lead free zones were declared and I don't know if that area falls into that PC zone or not. I know you can't shoot steel core or steel jacketed bullets there. I have thought about trying to contact the BLM but have been too lazy. Just recently joined FRPC at Auberry; $150 for 18 months as a sr citizen, including my wife. That works for me.

I believe the lead-free zones are for hunting only; NOT for recreational shooting. I could be wrong, though.

In terms of licensed commercial ranges you can use Where to Shoot.org. Online. By zip code with full details and links.

I'm going to the Visalia Sportsman Association range on Saturday morning.

I live in Fresno, but the Auberry range won't let me shoot my Mosin's surplus ammo.

Hopefully I can see another Calgunner or two out there this weekend.

Nick, I live in Visalia and not far from the Visalia Sportsman Association range. I'll be there if it isn't covered with snow by then.

The ammo must be steel core or jacketed. I have a lot of WW 147 gr JBT reloads in '06 and 308 that I can't shoot there because of the steel jacket. I bought the bullets years ago from Midway and didn't know they had steel jackets. I was a little upset. I can't even shoot them on BLM land.

I just shot there last week for my CCW renewal. I have shot there a lot years ago. The thread you posted is more than a year old so don't know how up to date it is. There are still a lot of law enforcement agencies that use the range so you might just have to see what is going on before you shoot. The price is right, though I remember when it was only $20. I don't know if they have any restrictions on rifle ammo.
