I use external TB drives for data only so I can carry it to a new laptop easily.

Just a bit more detail about what you want to accomplish would help.

3TB and SSD have entirely different qualities. 3TB drive is meant to be used as a storage drive for porn, HD porn and more porn. SSD is meant for fast program loading and quick response times, its built for operating system and programs. So get both

This will be my next build, but I will look for a rpm HDD that is also configured to store non-porn materials.

Last summer I build a new gaming box and used a 256gb M4 SSD for the boot drive, with a 3tb Seagate 7200 rpm drive for my data, mostly virtual hard drives for Virtualbox.

Still, your question is vague and kind of useless for us to give input if we don't know what you're doing. A small fast SSD and a big slow mechanical drive are fundamentally opposites, so what's the purpose?

You can get a 900GB SSD for 600 bucks now.

HDD for mass storage. SSD for general use. Make sure to be consistent with your backups. In my experience, SSDs are devout followers of Murphy's Law.

Like others have already said. SSD for OS and programs. Big regular drive for pics, movies, music, data.

I installed a 3TB SATA in my server. Can't afford reasonably sized solid state drives. Based on price, it's an easy choice.

Price per GB is substantially higher for SSD's... and as others have said typically SSD's are used for faster boot drives and not storage. I'd look at a 7200 rpm or faster mechanical drive, say a Western Digital Black label.

Check newegg.com for pricing. Also make sure your mobo and bios can support HD larger than 2TB... some cannot!
