Default Could the 22LR ammo drought be ending?

I jailed a Savage 93R17 today. Asked if they had any 22LR ammo and of course the answer was NO. But, the salesperson said by the time I picked up the rifle
(10 days) they should have a big shipment. This is a small gun shop and I am sure they are low on any distributors customer list. So, maybe, just maybe supply is opening up. When I go back to get the rifle, if they have any, will advise.

Happy ammo hunting.

Congrats on your new rifle, if it were me I'd get the salesman to "Swear" that when they get the shipment in he or she will put a few boxes aside for you to test out your new shooter. Remember there are a lot of folks out looking or ammo. Including you and me I'd say a real lot of people.

The drought is only beginning.

"Big Shipment" might mean 20 bricks or something. One guy could buy the whole pile.

From what I've heard all ammo production is going mil > leo > civ. Because of this, the ammo supply to us civilians is few and far between. One of the big problems faced by ammo manufacturers is primer shortages (confirmed by reloaders).

Good thing about .22 is that military and LEO demand for it is pretty low so most of it goes straight to the civilian market. Also, .22 manufacturing is not impacted by the primer shortage.

I have been told by a few contacts, that we have at least 2 months before we start seeing a steady streaming and even then things will be tough because of panic hoarding. When you see it buy it.

Yeah I think the magic date of semi normality will be May. (semi-normality in that selection will be limited and prices will be a bit higher than say last year)

In the deals section there was a posting for Cabellas - 15.99 for 325 rounds. It went QUICK.

CSR I talked to was real nice & spent a few minutes talking with me about the whole deal. He thinks they have stock of the 325 packs and are just adding a few hundred boxes to inventory at a time, but he's not sure why. He also said they know that several web forums are posting every time they release a batch, & instantly their phone lines go nuts. They sell out in minutes, but spend hours afterwrards telling folks there's no more. Says it sucks, but he's happy to finally have some to sell. And he repeated what Penny's Dad's sources said - the mfrs are shipping rimfire ammo but thinks it'll be another 6-8 weeks before the buying slows down enough that they're able to keep the warehouses stocked.

Cabelas should have capped the max per order if they didn't want to be turning away people for hours. I mean guys were buying up 20-40 boxes at a time just to have it, meaning guys that just want 2 boxes were screwed. But I'm sure they'll be able to buy some extra stock of the guys with 40 boxes for only 250% markup!

Even Midway got hammered. I like the round nose Aguila and bought two boxes. Was gone about 20 min later.

Yeah I am down to one box of federal match .22lr. I shot 260 rounds on Saturday at Angeles and they were selling .22lr for $5 for a box of 50! My dad has a few bricks of the federal bulk .22, when I told him that they are now worth double what he paid for them he was shocked!

I'm pretty slow. I shoot 15 rounds per shooting period, so I make 120 rounds last a session.

Can someone explain to a noob why .22LR is being hoarded and in short supply? I understand the whole centerfire and 223/556 thing, but why .22LR? I haven't heard anything about banning .22LR rifles. And, as someone mentioned above it's not like the military or LEOs are stocking up on it either. I just don't get it.

I have a good stock pile of .22 but I have no problem finding more. You just have to knw where to look. There are some places that sell ammo that you wouldn't think to look. The Kmart near my house just closed and they had all kinds of ammo that was hidden in the back of the store. A few 500 packs and got 30% off since the store was closing.

With the price of ammo skyrocketing. 22lr is pretty cheap to shoot and continue with practice.

You're not planning on running that .22 LR through the new rifle right? IIRC the 93R17 chambered in .17 HMR.

so this is a trickle down thing??? 223/556 owners can't find/afford ammo so now they're moving to smaller/cheaper rounds? i guess that makes sense, although I wouldn't have believed there's enough 223/556 owners out there that also shoot enough .22LR to cause a shortage and price spike. I thought there was something I was missing, but I guess it's just simple trickle down economics. thanks!

Not just 223/5.56 ammo. All ammo has gone up lately, even 9mm where it was 10-15 bucks for a box of 50 for new factory rounds is not like 20-30 bucks.

30 bucks for 50 rounds of 9mm or 30 bucks for 500 rounds of 22lr. Which do you think will last longer???

Yeah, I hope OP sees this that post!

I briefly thought "Oh, OK, maybe 17 hmr will be more readily available?!" nope, also ... wow, it's expensive.

I think the next time I go to the range, I'll leave my "ultimate clip loader" and uplulas at home. Just to slow down the rate of consumption!

Even better, go to an outdoor range and shoot BP guns, that should slow it down even more!

A good deal of the "shortage" is artificial. As someone posted, people buying up large amounts of ammo, when normally they would only buy one or two bricks. If everyone would just relax a bit and just buy what they need instead of hoarding we would have enough to go around. I find it an abomination when someone on here posts something like the following: "Went into X store and they had 50 boxes of .xxx and I bought it all."

I've got about 4k+ rounds of 22. But, I've never bought more than 2 bricks at a time. Gotta leave some for others I say. Still gonna take me awhile to go through what I've got.

there was an initial run on everything and alot of guys figured they'd only be shooting their .22's for sort of a long while.

the real problem is not the hoarding, it's the manufacturers. they can only crank out so much product, and they have to decide whether to devote their resources to rifle, pistol, rimfire, etc.

personally, I think there's more to the "shortage", in that it's not market driven but there's been interference in teh market by the government. we do know they've been buying exceedingly large amounts of ammo, way more than they'll need.

it's not a hoarding problem but a supply problem. they'll catch up. it'll just take time.

but I do think the fascists running this country "get it", that basically a car without gasoline is useless. I'd bet that's the place to look.

I seriously don't want to pay 40.00 for 500 rds of 22lr. However, it seems like most people are buying as many as they can; whenever they can. That means the shortage continues and the prices stay high for now.

I'd rather stay home and lube my guns for the 15th time than pay someone 10 cents a round of bulk 22

With this ammunition proposal of registering and a 500 round limit. This is going to make californians want to buy even more. So in my opinion I am going to buy as much of the .22 I like while I can. I suggest you do so too. If you sit around being the nice guy you will be the loser in the end. Buy as much as you can.
