Default Timbuktu and the 2A

Here's a quote in today's paper from a doctor in Timbuktu, talking about being forced to attend amputations conducted by the Islamic folks, after they took over the country:

"Our lives were turned upside down. They had all the guns, so whatever they asked, we did. It was useless to resist."

While we're in no danger of an Islamic revolution here, this does address some aspects of the current national gun debate - namely, when the government/powers that be have all the guns, for everyone else it is "useless to resist."

I know we all know this, but the above may be useful in conversations with others.

In this case, it was a hand, for stealing, I think. I think it was also a 15 year old but I could be wrong.

Amputating a person's hand may be a strong deterrent against theft, but maiming people for petty crimes is a punishment way out of proportion to the crime.

This is definitely "cruel and unusual" punishment.

I agree but to many in the USA who think we have gotten too soft on crime which you can mark me down among them , harsh punishments like this evoke a well its about time someone did something that actually stops crime etc.

not trying to assume i know what any particular poster is thinking, just that i think in general that's why some people in the USA are actually okay with that sort of thing.
