Angry Become a 2nd Amendment Absolutist & Single-Issue Voter

No.

Some who voted are in reality anti-gun trolls trying to infect this forum with their suicidal anti-gun, pro-socialism sickness.

Some are simply ignorant fools who refuse to think.

Others are simply stupid cowards.

None of them are likely to change for the better any time soon.

Bobbi,
That motion states that an indicator of success is an increase in the number of cancelled purchases or failures to take possession. Has anyone considered or researched if any of those were law abiding individuals who did so because they were intimidated by this letter?

I find it incredibly creepy.

This looks like a clear cut case of intentional AND purposeful discrimination.

I believe it has always been the case that DROS info is sent to local law enforcement. At least that was the case when it was done via paper before computers. Only the letter surprises me -- not the transmission of the DROS to local authorities.

Forward to CGF, NRA and then send an invoice to the Attorney General and LAPD for using your tax paying dollars on this POS letter.

HA! This is why I love living in San Bernardino. Yes, we have A LOT of crime on the whole for a mid sized US city, but most of our citizery don't walk around Downtown at 2 in the morning with red or blue rags hanging from our pockets (this seems to be the basis for the majority of crime in Berdoo). When our City Attorney was asked what people should do in response to our dwindling police force, his response was, "Get yourself a gun."

The info in the motion was based on the 2008 RAND study that you can download for free here: http://www.rand.org/pubs/technical_reports/TR512.html

There was follow-up article that analyzed the data that said "[t]he letter appears to have no effect on the legal transfer rate or on the short-term rate of guns subsequently turning up in a crime." That's available here: http://link.springer.com/article/10....292-010-9113-5

If they have such a big problem, this letter could just be a form letter handed out when you pick up your gun. There is absolutely no legitimate reason to have someone's name and address recorded and used by the state for this purpose other than to be used for intimidation. There is also no reason to add this type of expense to the state budget when this info can be posted or handed out at the FFL.

Let me get this straight.. On the one hand, the government has the money, time and resources to send law abiding gun owners intimidating letters but on the other, the government is complaining they don't have the time to remove the firearms possessed by 20k prohibited persons, namely convicted felons.
The only people more stupid than those in government in California, are the millions of idiots who keep voting these morons in. This state is truly doomed.

It's just plain intimidation.

Question: We know how they get the information, do we know what they do with the information once the letter is sent? This is what worries me.

Was anyone ACTUALLY intimidated? I can't imagine a gun owner is that much of a ponce. Its not harassment unless they keep sending it to you over and over again, but it certainly makes you wonder.

I think the idea of handing it to you when you buy your gun is a GREAT idea. It's a good "Feel Good" measure that is really of no consiquence.

And personally I would shoot at it, youtube it, and send it back

I don't think the point is whether anyone was actually intimidated. The intent of the letter and that line, in particular, was intimidation. We know who you are, where you live and what you have...we're watching.

OK, if you got such a letter, why not go to a city council meeting and politely ask them why your city is wasting your money on this stuff? Ask them why they don't prosecute the people who actually do the straw purchases for the gang bangers?

It appears to be perfectly legal for them to do this. So if you can't make them stop with a lawsuit, why not give them grief in the political arena?

HiyaBrad, I'm curious if you received the letter while under DROS during the 10-day wait or if you received it after pick-up.

Why not start down the road of privacy rights like HIPPA laws in the medical world? Exposing a gun owner's name and address is driving all the build parties. I will probably never buy another registered gun. I am currently gathering parts for a 1911, AK, and an AR. Once I have them built and a stock of ammo, I will probably sell off everything else so I get OFF the lists.

It seems like I am not the only one with this plan.

Is the city att'y sending "remind you of your responsibility" form letters to parolees? They are a greater threat than a recent DROS. No, you say? Oh. So its about political correctness. CA is stuck on stupid.

I haven't yet read the RAND document, but am wondering how this could not be construed to be a data security breach of confidential information by the CA DOJ.

In fact, the CA DOJ investigates such breaches. Maybe they should look into it.

In the case of a long gun purchase, I'm sure this information is purged from their computer system after 90 days.

Keep buying firearms by the truck load and force the city to go bankrupt on the cost of those letters.

Oh wait, LA is already bankrupt.

Wow. Maybe they should put some sort of tag on your house, or the curb in front of it. That way if there's a shooting nearby they can immediately identify where the gun might have come from.

I am not sure I completely understand the issue. I have always assumed the government knew I had guns. So this doesn't really surprise me. Secondly, I am against gun restrictions. My opinion on real world gun violence solutions includes education. It is known that most gun violence occurs in big metropolitan areas like LA. So in my opinion, targeting new gun owners in LA for education is not that far out of line.

I get the gripe about registration and lists, but did anybody think that they aren't already on these lists (assuming you have bought guns since the late 80's).

If we are going to keep our rights nation wide, I hope the focus for reducing gun violence is focused where it matters, and LA qualifies. If I am missing some significant violation, fill me in.

Thanks for posting. The next letter I get from LA City Attorney's office I'll be sure to mark "return to sender" across the face of the unopened envelop.

Don't know if I'll get one since I live in Burbank.

I'll keep you posted if I get one.
