Default My New (to me) M1 Garand

So the story that goes with this one is pretty cool, unfortunately I cannot verify it. Cool nonetheless. It was apparently pieced together by the gunsmith that made the guns for the movie Tombstone. He chose all special parts, so it is a mix-master, but it has been ideally headspaced, has a brand new '54 barrel, re-finished glass bedded stock, milled Winchester trigger, Springfield receiver, etc. Took it out to the range once and shot the 20 rounds that I had available and shot like a dream, but I didnt put it on paper.....that's coming next time I just added a GarandGear "ported" gas plug so I can shoot my mild reloads out of it and not have to worry about bending the op-rod.

Even if these things arent true, it's still a nice looking piece

Op: Congratulations on your new to you, M1 Garand ! Awesome rifle. I'm thinking about ordering one myself. Please refresh my memory. By getting a " ported " gas plug, you can shoot " any " kind of 30-06? i.e. any grain count, Factory, handload, etc...

Also, what factory ammo would you use besides Hornady?.. I like having options.

haha. Enjoy!

I am certainly not the right person to ask

I have only shot 20 rounds of USGI M2 Ball out of it so far. I just cooked up some starting load 147gr loads via Ramshot TAC powder. It is very, very close to IMR 4895 in burn rates and is safe to use in .30-06 loads. The only issue is that there might be too much empty case space to get any consistency....we'll see.

As for the ported gas plug, the only thing I know about it is the data I got off of the www.garandgear.com website, which shows an average of about 30% less pressure at the gas port. It does not vent the gas out of the system, rather creates an expansion chamber at the oprod that delays the pressure build up a few milliseconds, which essentially decreases the end result pressure. The creator Eric said he has put thousands of commercial and his own reloaded rounds down the pipe without a problem. The data doesnt lie, but I will admit I am still a bit nervous. Others have said it's good to go. I hope so! Still playing it safe with a similar powder burn rate for now.

Great looking rifle. Garands are addicting but you reload so it's OK. Enjoy your new rifle.

Oy crikey! I await my Grand special from CMP and I'm glad I saw this. You mean there's 30.06 I can't shoot thru a Grand without a "ported" chamber?

Negative...He is referring to the "Gas Plug" that Garang Gear has on the market. I have one on my Garand and it cycles just fine. It beats the adjustable gas plug.

Alot of guys like Garand Gears plug but personally I prefer the option of a adjustable gas screw
I just cant understand how a one size fits all screw could work
I do know they will not work on tanker or shortened garands
