Default Any open land in the Bay Area to go shoot?

I am looking for any spots within 65 miles of San Jose to go shoot. Of course, it must be legal and do not want outdoor ranges. I would like to be able to set up my own targets and practice some tactical shooting drills.

Any help would be appreciated.

Panoche, Tumey Hills are the closest to SJ. About 2 hrs south on I5. Lots of info here in this forum.

I think you will have to drive further than 50 miles. You need BLM. As far as I know more than 100 miles south past Los Banos. If anyone knows anything closer, please post.

Also remember if you're going to Panoche/Tumey Hills that it's in the Condor zone so you'll need to use lead free ammo.

On that note I bet more condors have been killed by Wind Turbines than lead ammo but you don't see them being banned.

Williams Hill is 2 hours south of San Jose and is BLM land with campground and spots to shoot.

Lead free is required for hunting, not target shooting.

If your down there hunting you dont even want lead rounds in the car.

Trust me, we shoot lots of lead at Panoche Hills.

Lead ammo is fine for target shooting at panoche, tumey and Williams. Just bring extra trash bags and keep the place clean. To many jerks leave that place a mess.

Other than the places mentioned OR private land in unincorporated areas? good luck & hope you have a lawyer!! LOL

Put a thumbtack where that god forsaken arse hole of San Francisco is, the farther you are away, the better.

You need not insult San Francisco - many CalGunners are from SF, and find it a fine place to live.

Would you countenance such disparagement of Apple Valley?

As to OP, there are many good ranges within closer distance to SJ than Panoche. Why the desire to go further out?

^ If apple valley ever exhibited and embraced the same unconstitutional nonsense? Then no problem.

A little harsh, perhaps. I usually call it godless bastion of liberal madness. LOL

I can sympathize with the OP on this. There are a lot of good ranges in the Bay Area, but sometimes you want to shoot on your own terms, at targets of your choosing, and run tactical drills, etc.
That said, the locations named above are the closest legal outdoor shooting areas besides ranges that I know of (private land aside).

You should call the BLM office, closest 1 is probably Hollister. They can tell you where to go and set you up with maps.

Great Info. I did call the Hollister field office and was told that Panoche Hills would be my best option. That is about 2+ hrs from where I live. I can make it work, but was hoping for some other options of something closer.

Does anyone know of any private land that I could even rent to do some shooting on?

I'd be interested also. I know they have vacation rentals for hunters, but I'd like to do some plinking or help someone if they have a squirrel problem....

it's called Google, you can PM yourself with tons of search results at your fingertips. People here already gave you the search terms:
Panoche, Tumey Hills (forget Griswold Hills, no need to go that far inland).

BTW, Panoche and Tummy Hills are very beautiful. Worth the ride just for the views I think.

I'm looking for one as well cause I may have some armor to test out... And you can't shoot at armor at the normal ranges... This is not for sale so don't ask. Gonna do some testing for a friend. I can wait 6-9 months to do this...

I actually took a side detour off the I-5 when headed down to LA with the wife just to show the wife what Tumey looks like.

This is NOT true unless you are hunting. Target shooting on BLM land can be done using standard lead ammo. Fish and Game regs require the use of lead-free ammo if you are hunting only. Check BLM Hollister website or call the Hollister office. Panoche hills is approximately 35 miles from I5 and 152. Tumey hills is approx. 45 miles to the east entrance.

I stand Corrected.

Q. What about target shooting, “plinking”, or firearms for personal protection?

A. The Commission does not regulate these activities. Use of lead projectiles is legal unless another government entity has determined otherwise for lands they administer. The regulations prohibiting lead only relate to possession while engaged in specified hunting activities.
