Default what 9mm ammo do you use for defense?

Everything I've read tells me that there's a line between a round being too weak to transfer sufficient energy to the target and having so much energy that the round is more likely to pass through the target to hit something/someone else.

Whatever your gun cycles 100% reliably. For me federal HST, Speer Gold Dot or Remington Golden Saber

My #1 choice is Remington Golden Sabers, #2 Hornady Critical Defense. I also have some Corbon and Speer Gold Dots around, but they are not what I call primary. I have those because I got a good deal on the Corbon and the Gold Dots.

Something to remember is that a hollow point is designed to dump its energy inside the target and thus not over-penetrate and strike another. Whatever round you choose, be sure to run several boxes to be sure they cycle in your gun. I have had some people tell me they would not trust their life unless they have run 200 rounds through the weapon. These days, you would be hard pressed to find 200 premium hollow points, yet alone get a loan to buy them.

Winchester Ranger T-Series SXT +P 124 grain, RA9124TP. Great ammo, but getting harder to find.

Winchester Ranger Talon +P+ 127 grain, RA9TA I think. Low end of the .357 spectrum, not too bad i'd think...too bad it's rated at like 41K PSI haha

Nothing wrong with even a standard pressure 115 grain loading, unless you think you will need to defend yourself from goblins in ballistic vests inside a vehicle. I keep some 124 gr +P Gold Dots, and Golden Sabers handy for serious work.

Don't let the internets fool you, the 9x19mm has sufficient power to take care of business.

Typically people tend to.

Realistically though, shoot ammo that is reliable in your firearm, and that you can accurately place into the target.

Pistols are awful at killing people. Unlike rifle rounds, which cause hydraulic shockwaves and large temporary cavities and all that jazz, pistol ammo pretty much just makes holes of crush injury.

To that end, shot placement and penetration are most important. You worry about overpenetration? Any handgun round can "overpenetrate" through a wall very easily.

What you DO NOT WANT, is a round that cannot penetrate 12-13" into a target's vital organs. So what you should really worry about is not overpenetrating the wall, but rather underpenetrating the target.

Expanding ammunition just gives you a little bit of a margin of error.

Real world ballistic differences between the defense loads are minimal. The keys to success (accuracy and reliability) have already been mentioned but if you really want to do the job on an intuder, shoot twice. Generally, single gunshot mortality rates are down below 20% but the second shot puts them over 90%.

The one I shoot the most, that is reliable and can hit accurately where I point the pistol at.

(Until I get some HST's,) I stagger I think it is from 1st round to last: 124gr +p Gold-Dot, 115gr some Federal JHP +p I think it is, & 124gr +p Golden Sabers, then about like 6 rounds down I start introducing standard 115gr PMC ball (as I don't want to use my hot-reloads if a situation requires my defense in court).

Corbon, Winchester ranger and I still have some of the original Black Talon left. Federal hydro shock is a viable round as well.

Speer GD's, Rem GS's and Fed HS's for me. Many down the pipe in my 9mm's without issue. All 147 grainers.

Ranger and HST 147gr. +p.

The cops and friends I work with use it but more importantly they both run %100 reliably in my 9mm.
