hobbies are becoming more of a luxury, where as; you could have had multiple in the past, now you can only have a couple.

I will not be surprised if all the brand name manufacturers cut out production of a few of their cheapest ammo offerings - bring the prices up a dollar per 50 on average. The day of 19.99 325 ct. cans may go away for good after this panic.

Cheap ammo will be the territory of no-name companies that come and go by the dozen for lack of solid year-to-year profit.

Let's hope I'm wrong...

read on a blog today that someone went into a Cabela's and asked why there is NO .22 ammo available anywhere. People at Cabela's said that the manufacturers aren't even shipping them.
In 3 months we have had a shortage in most popular calibers and yet you see nothing being sent to retailers.
Does anyone know if there may be any truth to this?
It's hard to believe that they would do this just for the "supply and demand" theory. They know that there is a lot at stake when it comes to supporting the Second Amendment.

I own a neighborhood hardware store and we sell ammo. We are finding plenty of ammo available, but it is a lot more work and expense to bring it in the store. Before the panic, I used our hardware coop and a major sporting goods distributor as our suppliers. We would place an order about once a month and get nearly everything we wanted in almost any quantity at a fair price and with free freight. Now they have almost nothing. We are paying 2.5 to 3 times as much as we were a few months ago and I have to use about 20 suppliers. That means I don't get the free freight anymore. That alone adds 8 to 15% and I have to work to find a large enough order with each supplier, that they have in stock, to keep the freight costs down to those levels.

I called and spoke with one of the top people at our distributor to find out what is happening. He said that at their regular end of the year dealer show, they wrote four times the volume of ammo orders that they had done in ammo sales in all of 2012. When they went to place those orders, the ammo manufacturers told them that they had already sold out all of the 2013 production (at maximum production volume) and well into 2014. With people stocking up and to supply all of the new gun purchasers, the manufacturers cannot keep up. Our contact told me that this is much worse than the last two panics (2008 and ?). He would not be surprised if this shortage was the new normal for at least a year or more. It will take them that long just to fulfill all of the orders they got in December much less since then.

I guess I should be happy just to be able keep our store stocked even if the prices are so much higher.

John

how many different manufacturers of 22 ammo are there?
and yet none of them can produce any ammunition in the past 3 months?
why haven't there been any articles in any of the shooting or gun magazines addressing this topic?
they write articles on new ammunition but not how or where you can buy it.
Hey Federal, Remington, Winchester, Fiocchi, CCI, are you listening ?

There have been articles posted. The companies say they are running at full capacity , but cant keep up with demand , to many hoarders. I bought 4000 rounds right after the killings and bought another 10,000 about a month latter. I felt kind of foolish at the time ,but nowI am glad I did. The first order I paid 4 cents a round ( CCI standard velocity)and the second 7 cents a round which (CCI mini mags)I thought was high at the time.

This is classic supply and demand behavior. If any of you are old enough to remember when gas prices skyrocketed in the late 1970's due to OPEC's actions, people looked for cheaper alternatives: walking/biking/carpooling/public transportation to get to work. That helped reduce the demand. The new normal, after everything settled down, was much higher gas prices. I paid 24.9/gallon in the early 1970's. Now it is over $4. Luckily I have had electric cars for most of my driving since 1980.

When the prices of 223/556 went from about 45/round (our store) to $1.00-1.10, the people who like to go out "plinking", looked for cheaper alternatives. Even though 22LR went from 3-4/round to 12-16/round, it looks like a huge bargain. You can still shoot a bunch for the same money as long as you reduce the use of the more expensive rounds and increase the usage of the cheaper ones. Thus 22LR has been the hardest caliber for us to get. When the panic hit, a few folks cleaned us out in a couple of days. That's when we put on a 1-2 box limit on all of our ammo. It took me a few weeks to get 22LR back in stock. We had and have stacks of 223/556 and never ran out. We probably sell close to one box of 22LR for every box of all of our other calibers put together.

John

Look carefully at the Democrats massive bullet buy..they know the manufacturers have to serve them first...this trick was to dry up public supplies and hike cost of hobby to effect their gun control rabid desire by a side door process .

Ammo Bros in Cerritos had 22Lr in stock as of yesterday. I'm not sure if they still have any remaining. They only allow one box per customer...

I did the same thing on this forum. Maybe the OP could change the tittle to include "rimfire" in the title. Some of us only search most recent and don't pay attention to the area it is posted in. Also in Tapatalk you can't always see the forum it is posted in.
