"Sure"

Buy gun, have it finagled so it only shoots one bullet.

Fill out paperwork.

After wait period, you have Mr Gun guy remove the single shot modification, go about your business.

I already own said guns. So will I still need to have it done, or does it only have to be done if I sell?

Can anyone chime in with the costs of their SSE for a Shield?

SSE is how one gets an off roster pistol into the PRK. You do not need to if you already own or sell.

Buying from someone in state, getting a gift from son/daughter or mother/father from out of state, or buying from LEO are the other ways of getting off roster without dealing with SSE.

Hello everyone! New to the forum here. Also pre-ordered my Shield through Turner's. Called S&W, they said they shipped 15 CA Compliant Shields during December. :/

Called S&W, customer service rep told me to expect them maybe end of February.

Is there something unclear in the simplified portion of the sticky regarding the exemption process? I can't think of a more simple way to describe what's going on.

This topic caught my eye because I'm in the market for a subcompact.

I handled a small Smith and Wesson M&P without a safety. Is that the normal M&P Compact version? I thought I was handling the Shield, but the lady at the counter couldn't verify.

I heard from S&W at SHOT Show that they were diverting all possible production resources to AR-15 production, and it would affect (slow or stop) manufacturing of most of their other products in the meantime.

That's not usually necessary. Find a shop that does SSE and they may or may not have the kit of parts needed to make a gun a single shot gun. I remember holding a non-CA Shield at Sac Black Rifle when they first came out but I don't remember asking them if they did SSE on them yet.

Yeah. The sticky had a list of shops that do the SSE and the one in sac will do the Shield (though it says .40, curious if they will do a 9mm for my wife). I sent them a message and am awaiting a reply.

SSE process usually involves adding a longer barrel and locking the magazine.

Hi - new to posting on this forum so trying my part to contribute... regarding the S&W and SSE; i spoke to Sacramento Black Rifle and asked about the availability of them doing a SSE for the S&W M&P in either 9mm or .40; the response was they will not be doing them since S&W "has" a Cali compliant version. I am interested in the .40 version and if anyone in the NorCal (Sacramento region) knows anyone who is willing to do the SSE for this will you please post? Also wasn't sure if this belonged in this thread or the SSE sticky so apologies if I missed the target (er no pun intended).

The sticky has a list of dealers in different areas that will do it (including sac).

The one I contacted said he only does the .40 version and its $50

Not sure why you would want to go to the trouble of an SSE for an M&P. If you don't like the mag safety, a gunsmith can remove it for you without too much trouble once you own the gun, and if you are handy with tools you can do it yourself. Mag safety isn't the big issue it is on a gun like the Browning HP where it messes-up the trigger pull and prevents drop-free magazines.

As for the "shoot without the magazine" scenario, it seems to me that that would work for or against you depending on the circumstances. I agree that I personally would prefer no mag safety, but I haven't felt the need to pull the one on my MP9c.

I had called and emailed S&W around december timeframe and they said they were in the process of producing and shipping them to CA but due to high demand, the orders are backed up for at least 6-8 months. You can probaly move to another state, claim residency there and buy the shield in that state faster than here in CA. Then I called Mike and Norris at WarriorOne in Riverside and they said they have it coming, but only if your LEO. Same thing for Riflegear in Fountain Valley.

Yeah, mine was kind of a retarded question. I'm not too familiar with the M&P lineup, but a simple Google search found this comparison. The internet is amazing. I should use it more.

I had the opportunity to shoot an M&P Shield 40 last weekend. My wife and I were at the range in Concord shooting her M&P 40c and a guy sets up next to us with a Shield. He said because he was in law enforcement he was able to get a non California version from out of state. The shield has a bit more kick than my wife's compact. I would like to shoot about 50 rounds through it before I made a decision to buy one.

I'm sorry too for posting about an off roster Shield when the OP was asking about California models but yesterday was truly a crazy day for me, I'm still in shock.

I picked up a bodyguard .380. Absolutely love just throwing it in my pocket next to my wallet. I also have a M&P .45 that rocks.
