Default Need a new Laptop, options

Need to find a new one this old beast is just having too many issues anymore, bought it new when Vista was just out.

Not feeling the MW Windows 8 love and Mac seems to think their stuff is worth more than I want to pay.

Do not want a used laptop.

You can pick up a new Dell for well under $1000 and get Windows 7 on it. Try their outlet store:

These are all Windows 7...

http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-...9675577&sr=1-1
http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-...9675577&sr=1-3
http://www.amazon.com/Asus-A55A-AB51...9675577&sr=1-5

These two are Windows 8
http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-...dp_ob_title_ce
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-A55A-AH51...dp_ob_title_ce

I would ask if you need a laptop, the reason I ask Is because my parents just got a mini-mac, http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MD388LL-...9675820&sr=1-2

and the thing is just amazing, I don't think you can beat it for the value (even though it is Apple, and admittedly, I hate Apple) the one I linked has 1TB of Hard Drive, and an i7 processor. To get that good of a package in a laptop, its going to cost you an extra 500 bucks. The thing with Apple is there is now windows 8, obviously, I took my parents to Best Buy and it was hard for them to figure out windows 8. Heck, I had a noticeable learning curve and just didn't like it much... Anyways, if you have a TV laying around or a monitor you can come out at around 1k for a kick *** computer that should honestly last 6-8 years very very easily. even if you don't have a monitor, Dell makes a kick *** one for around 250 bucks.

also remember, if you buy off of Amazon, use the CGF link to support the 2nd Amendment!

My home computer is a laptop with broken hinges that I use a monitor, mouse and keyboard with now. I need a laptop to take with me to work . . . so I'm not using the company one on breaks / meals.

bad enough that .gov spies on us like 1984 now, don't need work doing it

Are you using 'their' internet?

For those purposes I would just snag one off of amazon that is around 500-600 bucks, they should all fair well

How about a Samsung Chromebook? Cheapest model is about $300... especially if you just need it for web browsing and what not.

Putting aside the look and feel of Windows 8, you can actually purchase - or it may be free... i dunno - an application/shell that sits on top of Windows 8 and gives it the look and feel of past Windows Operating Systems. Now you can buy that new windows comp, install the shell that sits on top of Win 8 and it will look like the traditional desktop comp that many still like. Unfortunately, I forget what it is called. Do some leg work on a search engine and you should find it. Good luck.

No reason to spend more than $250 to $400 for what you are looking for....check out the hot deals forum on fatwallet.com.

When you see a good offer jump on it as the good deals listed over there often sell out in store or online quickly.

I have been rather impressed with the Vizio line of laptops. They are the same guys who make the TV's, and do a pretty good job. You can get them at Walmart or Target generally:

http://www.target.com/p/vizio-14-lap...i_sku=14122457

They do not load the OS with a bunch of crapware like you see on most new laptops.

Also, Vizio is an American company (although they still manufacture overseas). Anyway, if you are looking around I would recommend looking at their offerings.

Also, I have had very good luck with Lenovo (formerly ThinkPad). They may be a bit more, but well worth it.

Lots of other sites in that price range too.

$1000 for a Dell? Gag me with a spoon.

I have had two Acers for 2/3 years, and two Toshibas in the past lasted ten years.

Whatever you get, back it up.

I picked up an Asus laptop at Christmas. It was loaded with Win 7 pro. 8 gigs of ram and a 1 tb hdd. I paid $300. Look for those win 7 laptops at Best buy. They're on clearance because they're windows 7. They're superior to the Win 8 laptops and have the familiar interface. I've seen the same laptops in several BBs. Happy hunting.

well, for laptops nothing beats apple and their build quality. but I get it, people think apple are for hipsters and they're to cool for apple products yeah yeah. I'm a apple laptop guy but I build my own Desktop PC's (hardcore gamer) so pc does has a huge section of my heart as well. Check microcenter.com they have some sweet deals on NEW and USED laptops. I dig HP laptops, even though their customer service will 90% of the time have you chatting with India... but I use squaretrade for warranties for every single piece of tech that I own so I never bother with the foreign customer service. good luck with your choices. bought my wife a great 17in HP laptop with windows 8 from bestbuy (preordered it when windows 8 became available) and she loves that laptop very much. fast amd quad core huge hdd etc and it was 450.

For business users and clients I suggest these in the following order:
  1. Dell
  2. Toshiba
  3. Asus
Stay away from HP... unless you like to talk to Indian (dot not feather) tech support!

Don't be afraid of Windows 8. The new GUI is very easy to disable and underneath everything looks like Windows 7.

And if you want to go retro and get the classic windows look, install this:
http://www.classicshell.net/

I put it on my work computer (Win 7) and it now looks & feels like Win2k except it's much faster!

I'm very picky about keyboards, so I would get a Lenovo without a doubt. Any of their pro/business laptops are well worth the money and will last forever. (Their consumer grade machines however appear to be just like Toshiba/Dell, ie. the keyboards are spongy and the cases are glossy.)

Lenovo Thinkpad, look no further:

I respectfully disagree...

Unless the OP is a G33k or a "power" user, Win8 just plain stinks. The average Windows (XP thru 7) user gets lost with the Win8 metro interface.
PS - MS doesnt support any of these GUI "hacks" to Win8 at all! Can you say VOIDED support? Cmon, I know you can!

Here is a perfect example from Chris Pirillo (a well known tech guru and blogger) and there are hundreds of similar experiences/videos all over the net.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4boTbv9_nU

Unless you "hack" win8 by using a classic shell or start button it is difficult to navigate for the "average" end user.

Also, I dont have any problems with any of the hundreds of Dells I have spec'd/installed for clients over the years, and my personal lappy is a Toshiba. Its been one of the most reliable lappys I've ever owned and it is now 6 years old! I dont find any issues with the keyboards on either... the more expensive Dell Inspiron lappys have a full size kb that is backlit too!

You might want to look into an Apple refurb from the Apple store online. Don't pay the excessive Apple store in the mall prices. They also offer education and student discounts on top of the refurbished prices. You can get a good refurbished Apple laptop in the $800 range if you shop carefully. They carry the same warranty as new machines. I don't like Apple's politics, but they do make an easy to use computer and when you have a problem it's very easy to take it into the Apple Store and say "help me".
