You actually just reminded me that I needed to update my address with FCC. I run a 2-meter mobile in my pickup. I'm working on adding a ground HF/multi-mode radio to my home setup eventually...

I just made a portable mobile unit last night with a Yaesu 2900R along with a sealed 12AH battery and all wired up in a Pelican 1430 Case. It also has a 12V cigarette lighter charging with external antenna outlet. I tried this morning and chat for about 30 minutes, it got really hot. So I think I will put in a fan for cooling.

Could make for a good hot plate to keep your coffee warm.

You can get small 12V pc fans cheap at Radioshack. Make sure you hook it up with a switch of some sort so you only have to run it when you need it.

I'd love to see some pictures of your setup...

I have the 8900R and it runs hotter than a son-of-a-gun too. Be sure you are operating on the lowest power level necessary to make a reliable QSO. The fans will help a lot. If you can get thermostat controlled fans, you may help extend your battery life.

Yes I do have a 12V fan in my garage and will be installing it with manual switch and drill some holes into the case for ventilation. My setup is simple and very mobile. I can put it in the front seat leg rest area or any place in the car. It is only 20 lbs. and easily be carry to anywhere. I am using a 6' Slim Jim Duel band antenna that is roll up when in the box along with the 12V cigarette charger. I also have a small solar panel that I can use to recharge my built in battery if need to. I already have a mobile communication unit in my military truck so this setup doesn't need to be very extensive. I need high power and portable capability....
