I'm looking for outdoor places to go shooting. I live in Santa Maria and would like to stay away from the prices of gun ranges and long drives to outdoor shooting areas. I'd be willing to drive 30-45 minutes as long as the area is guaranteed to be open. I usually go to Colson Canyon or Rockfront off of 166. I'd like to know if there are any other public places in the LPNF to shoot at. I don't really want to hike all that far to shoot either since I will likely have a lot of things to carry. Thanks in advance.

I know you said you dont like ranges but SLOSA is only 30 minutes from you and they only charge $10/person for the whole day. Its a good outdoor range with steel out to 400 yds. I've never been hassled there about shooting rapidly with my AR so I wouldn't imagine you will either. Just follow the safety rules and you'll have a great time.

I usually go to colson canyon or shoot at one of my berry ranches. Been to SLOSA and its not bad. $10 is very reasonable

SLOSA now has a 700 yard gong as well just fyi. I have gone to shoot off of the road just past Rockfront road. It's called Sierra Madre Road. About 14 miles up that road was a clearing off to the right. Pretty long drive though, about 1.25 hours total from nipomo. I just go to SLOSA early in the morning when no one is there. I'm like you, I'd much rather shoot out in nature and not deal with cease fires and other people around, but this area isn't very good for that.

Maybe Berry man would like to open up a berry ranch?

I have. And I was shooting a Mosin at the time. I guess I was disturbing the fat old men("The President") down at the shotgun range by hitting the metal gong "to fast". The dude said I was going to start a fire from the sparks. I packed up and left.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think I'll give SLOSA a try. My buddy has a Mosin and I'd like to see what it could do on the 700 yd range.
