Default Beretta 96 (40SW) conversion to 9mm?

I hope this is the right forum. My sister asked me about converting a Beretta 96 to 9mm. Her husband is deadset on 40 cal, and a Beretta. She wants something she can shoot.

I told her that it would probably cost $200, figuring barrel, slide and magazine needs to be changed, but would check.

What would have to be changed out for reliable, safe operation?

Are there any kits available for this?

She is not in California anymore, but Nebraska if that makes a difference

I believe it's just barrel and mags. Might have her call someone like Jarvis barrels and see what they say.

It's possible, and fairly easy, although I think you are under estimating the cost.
Her best bet would be to find a used Beretta in Nebraska. My last one, used, cost me $450 last May here in CA. They are much easier and cheaper in free states. My nephew recently picked up a Beretta Inox for under $500.

But wouldn't headspace and extracting be an issue?

Headspace wouldn't be an issue but extraction would be. Need the slide too. Single shot??

Don't know. I am figuring the 9mm would be just for the range.

Probably has bought the 96 already. They were driving up to the pawn store to buy it when she had to go.

It looks like on this forum and others, people selling 92 uppers for 250-350. I assume that would be with a barrel...obviously too much for a slide by itself? So I guess she should post a WTB on an appropriate forum (I, for one, cannot find it anywhere).

Would single shot be easier/cheaper? (well no magazines would be cheaper)

I've been looking into this myself. So far it looks like it's just a barrel, locking lug and mags. Others say try that first and see how it runs, and if it's funky with the ejection change out the ejector, and possibly recoil spring.

Sorry, you misunderstood my feeble attempt at humor.

With only a barrel, it could only be used as a single shot. The spent casing would not be extracted reliably.

I have seen an occasional slide assembly listed, either here or on Gunbroker. They are few and far between.

For my 96 conversion to 9mm, I just dropped in a 92 barrel and it works fine, even with the 96 mags. Although I did experience some feed issues with older, heavily used 96 mags because the feed lips were slightly too wide to retain the 9mm round properly. Newer 96 mags didn't have this problem. I eventually picked up a used 92FS slide to go with the 9mm barrel. So now I just swap complete uppers but only use the 92 upper for plinking. Otherwise, it stays as a 96 for HD.

All you need is barrel and mags, the factory barrel and 9mm mags will work fine.

I just tried putting a 92 mag into my 96 and I've learned something new. It does appear to work. I didn't try replacing the barrel but that shouldn't be an issue.
