Default jacket

can someone recommend a jacket or a review site for backpacking? looking for something weatherproof, lightweight, breathable, and durable. if I can find one that fits this and isn't $500 I'd rather have a long lasting jacket then my short term tears easily jackets. review sites I found just seem to say good things about everything

Plenty of reviews on backcountry.com. Some good deals, too.

Geartrader.com sells a lot of Backcountry's return items at heavily discounted prices.

Activity may be key for you- if you ski, search ski site for clothing recommendations; try a hunting site if you hunt; surfing, running, mountaineering, 4X4, masturbating, etc. sites all have sub-forums in which clothing threads may be found.

A single do-all jacket is preposterous. Look into a softshell for high activity situations and a hardshell for when it's puking rain, minimum.

That stated, I have several jackets. Which one I use depends on the weather on a given day as well as the activity. I have several soft shells (3 old Cloudveils and a Rab), a hybrid (Rab) and a couple of hard shells (Rab and Chlorophylle). I'll also occasionally use a synthetic insulation jacket when it's colder (Montbell), and I have a down jacket for when it's really chilly (Western Mountaineering).

Good luck.

geartrader doesn't seem to be around anymore. did you mean gearscan? I have some heavier snowboarding jackets, warm weather boarding, and others. I normally use the warm weather boarding jacket for hikes since it packs light but it gets too warm. I guess what I'm looking for is more a durable, lightweight, breathable, rain jacket. I get warm easily and not planning winter mountain hikes. I hate hiking through snow.

Check out eVent fabric or the newer Evo fabric. Both are supposed to be markerly superior to Goretex with respect to breathability.

Also consider fit. These jackets are all constructed differently and some will cause you nothing but grief.

Also consider layering options, if needed. My jackets are fitted slightly loose so that I can wear a fleece or marino wool layer underneath.

If you warm easily and aren't planning of a lot of rainy conditions, again, consider a softshell jacket. I use softshells at least 75% of the time, even in rain.

Geartrade, not "geartrader". Sorry.
