Default Family members inviting themselves to your prepps.

Was at my nephews BD party yesterday and one of my girl cousin says if SHTF happens she is taking her baby and her BF and they are coming over to my house. I said I dont have anything for you guys. She said I have to let them in because we are family. I responded with dont come over because im coming to your place and you have to let me in. All Joking aside. What do you say to your family members when they find out you are a prepper and self invite themselfes to all your prepps? How do you break it to them without looking like an *******.

i say "you can come over if you have something to contribute"

whether that means bringing food, water, medical supplies, ammo, personal skill sets, etc.

if you're just gonna come over and sit on your rear hoping to be taken care of you can go elsewhere.

You roll your eyes at her... and then lay in some more food, water, and baby wipes. Family is family.

This is exactly why prep status should be shared only on a need to know basis.

I feel this too. I hope nothing ever happens, but when I bring up my preps with my wife and step daughter, my wife says "what about my sisters and her 3 daughters, I worry about them and she has no husband". Uhhhhh wtf am I FEMA? It's expensive and space constricting enough to keep 1 weeks rations for the 3 under my roof, now I should be able to accommodate myself and 6 other women? Duuuurrrr

I would give tips to my friends and family on how to prep. I cared for them and I thought the info would help them start prepping. It surely backfired on me..

don't share with anyone who wont help. treat it as a need to know basis. if they find out and they won't contribute then tell them they will not find any form of "welfare" from you...

Just like any party. You have to bring something for everyone when you show up. Along with a skill set to help the whole.

^ exactly. However, it is hard to turn away good family. Just make them contribute or it is TS for them.

This exact subject has been a running joke with my family and friends for the last several years. Last Christmas I turned the joke around on many of them. I gave as a gift a can of food, a p-38 can opener and a list. I told each one of them that the can represented all I could afford to give each of them if SHTF. The P-38 was a tool that would allow them to eat. The list would allow them to live. If you come to my house when SHTF I have already given you food and a tool and a list.
When the subject comes up now I ask them about the can, the tool and the list.
What have you done so that you can live?
I share with them various websites, pass along good deals, encourage them to be prepared. My conscious is clear, I have lead them to water.

Well, I don't really consider my nephew's cousin's uncle's sister's brother-in-law (or whatever you said) to be "family". They're.....kinda-sorta family. They can go pound sand if they're not willing to help.

Who is really "family" is going to vary from person to person. You know who is your family in your heart. My family is always welcome to anything that is mine, regardless.

In the interests of being politically correct, tell these "family" members that you have stopped prepping, and now intend to report to a FEMA camp as soon as possible.

Feed them, fatten them then eat them. They can be a part of your prepping plan. Like beef on the hoof.

Thank you. I'm actually quite surprised by all the harsh feelings folks have here towards their own families! Sure, you're gonna have those family members that will take a lot more than they give, but personally I couldn't turn away any member of my family. In fact, I try to prep a little extra for friends and neighbors too. I think in an emergency/crisis situation it will be important to at least try and help other people. Its what Americans do.

Well jonny we are all "family" then, no matter how distant. Please pass the dehydrated beef and some ammo.

Nothing is more important than family, and great friends for that matter.

If you think you are going to survive on your own, well you are sadly mistaken. Stand alone, die alone. Threads like this and people price gouging on ammo and weapons on other places on this forum tells me the true nature of things here.

I wouldn't want most of you here on my 6.

My family and friends are going to do just fine. We are bound by a common goal, family and God.

I think most of the replies are due to the family that insists on showing up if things go bad are the same ones that call you crazy for being prepared. I myself have lot's of friends and family that say they'd show up. Some of them are just mooches and we're currently paying for them already. And dead weight is dead weight. But on the other hand the ones that have something to add and have that sense of self pride and loyalty can come on in.

I'd suggest going to Costco and getting the largest bag of rice and another of beans and put it aside. $40 or so.

Hopefully, they can help watch your house when you can't.

I always offer helpful tips and pointers on how to start prepping. Not all my words fell on deaf ears. Unfortunately some of my family members are takers and not givers. Yes it's time to put up a smoke screen and publicly announce I gave it up.

Most people get a clue when they see a few water barrels as it's not common to city folk. And a stocked pantry, good amount of camping equipment, and it seems that quality and durability rate higher on our lists than price. Along with just general awareness of other uses for things that are common.

This is why you don't tell anyone what you're up to or how many firearms you have etc.

Most of my family are not mooches and are welcome at my place should the shtf. Besides, I can't watch the perimeter all day and all night for weeks without sleep.

As for my brainless coworkers and other acquaintances that think I'm a nut for keeping a few supplies around, they can kiss my arse...... if they can make it past the perimeter.

I get bashed all the time for what I do, and then in the next breath they tell me they are heading over when the shtf. I tell them not to come empty handed or else there's the perimeter issue.

I wrote a very detailed disaster contingency plan for my family. Only my mother and one sister out of seven (7) siblings took me seriously. No other family members. No uncles, aunts cousins, nieces nephews, no one

My sister lives in a rural area so we agreed that I would get our mother to her & she'll take care of moms. She promptly announced that she's shooting anyone else who shows up.

A few people wrote "family is family". For that to be true, the other person has to think/feel the same way. If they don't....

I'll help those who help themselves and can contribute with the understanding that....

Just because we are preppers doesn't mean we are stupid. Common sense dictates that not everyone who sits at the able is a dinner. Not every family member has the best interest of "the family" at heart. That person can not sit at my table.

We are bound by a common goal, family and God.
....when you have family/friends that are not bound by a common goal why make a bad situation worse?

But I think you hit the nail on the head. Some people have family members who would stab them in the back if given a chance to be on their 6.

The OP asked for advice. My advice is if they can contribute, take them in. If there is any doubt about their intentions turn them away.
